Ursa Unearthed by JL Madore

JL Madore, lover of family, animals and chocolate has a soft spot for romance and a hot button for sexy stories. She didn't find writing so much as it found her. Waking each morning with a vivid cast of characters tangled in chaos in her head, it seemed essential to capture them on the page.

Mika’s life has never been normal, but it’s hers.

After being told by the Great Spirit to stand up for the Earth Mother’s children and “save the great species from extinction,” she buries herself in an investigative journalism career hunting down poachers and exposing illegal trade in wildlife exotics. A survivor by nature, she would rather fight injustice than maneuver the hassles and heartache of relationships anyway.

When danger suddenly finds her unprepared, Mika’s perception of her life is shattered and she is hurled into a realm of magic and murder she does not understand. Seduced by Bruin, the powerful and sexy warrior who saves her life, Mika is catapulted into a world where Were-creatures and Scourge assassins threaten not only her life but her heart as well.

With the boundary between worlds crumbling, Mika realizes that her destiny to save the great species will draw her deeper into a reality more terrifying to her than anything she has faced before.

Trusting in love.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This is book two of five and a natural continuation from book one 'Blaze Ignites'. I love series novels and especially a series that focuses almost exclusively on a core group of characters. You really get to know them that way.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I wrote it in 6 or 7 months of a yearlong writing class. We met every two weeks to hone our skills, listen and learn from the others in the class and get swept away by the freefall writing prompts the facilitators gave us. It's my favourite way to write.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The mysterious connections that just happen near the end of the story that you didn't intentionally plant, but somehow your subconscious mind put there for you to discover right when you needed it. It's an awesome moment and if I'm lucky, happens once or twice a book.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing to deadline when I have stories buzzing in my head.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I think I'd be Diana Gabaldon so I could be on set in Scotland watching my novel and characters come to life. That's my end goal. Seeing my characters on TV or at the movies.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
There are a couple purple popsicles in the back of the freezer. I'd guess two years old.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
In the Scourge Survivor Series: Book 3 – Torrent of Tears is in edits. Book 4 – Blind Spirit is being written. I also have a dark paranormal that I've been shopping around to publishers, but everyone says Paranormal isn't trending right now, so no Angels and Demons. Meh. If I don't sell it, I'll self-pub those three. Oh, and I'm also writing a women's fiction loosely framed around the year I lived in Panama. Lots on the go.

Cemetery Highway by Hamish Robert Johnson

I grew up in Melbourne Australia and was fortunate enough to have a relatively unexciting childhood. After high school I attended film school at Deakin University, and while making the requisite pretentious art projects I discovered I had a knack for writing dialogue. In short, I wanted to be the next Quentin Tarantino.

After film school I put my passion asside and began an hilarious and relatively short lived culinary career. Quickly rising up the ranks, I found myself cooking in some of Australia’s finest restaurants and finishing a 3 year apprenticeship in 18 months. It was in these hellish kitchens that I rediscovered my love for quirky, dirty, flirty characters, which again stoked my desire for writing and the arts.

Upon hearing The Strokes for the first time, and with absolutely no preparation whatsoever I moved to New York City in 2003. I was once more surrounded by a bevy of interesting folks, inundating me with stories of hardship, romance and hope. How one cannot find inspiration in this city was beyond me. What was also beyond me was the ability to generate an income, so I hopped on the Greyhound with the little money I had left and got as far away as I could.

Austin Texas was my next port of call. Upon arriving I had a mere $40 to my name, but coupled with the attitude of a fearless traveler I was invincible. I quickly finagled a job, a room in a Revenge of the Nerds style college housing situation and the prominent position as lead guitarist in The Handsome Charlies.

I wouldn’t say I was a great guitarist, but I certainly knew how to act like one, and as we were sharing bills with The Black Angels and Ghostland Observatory I could be excused for thinking that I too would make it. But after a particularly ghastly SXSW performance I found myself standing in the parking lot listening to The Strokes perform “Is this it?” across the road. “No it is not”, I answered, and declared that I would return to writing and not continue to get distracted by flashier pursuits.

I commenced writing screenplays, pilots and web series like a madman and have not slowed down since. I now have multiple screenplays in various stages of development, and have completed my first novel. And I am here to stay!

Cemetery Highway is a rollicking tale of fame, friendship and falls from grace, set in a world where zombies are the elite and humans are the underclass.

Best friends Dexter, Michelle, Penny and Cakes have started a group called the Anti Zombie Alliance and plan on sticking it to the zombies once and for all. But when zombie big-wig Max convinces the suave Dexter to trade his standards for stardom, things get ugly.

What inspired you to write the story?
I have always loved the John Hughes coming of age stories. I wanted to tell a tale about a group of kids who are approaching the point in life where they decide on a career, but as a zombie story. The zombies I chose represent the corporate lifestyle, in that they work 100 hours a week in high profile, yet inconsequential positions.

How long did it take you to write?
The book took me about six months to write. That may sound fast, but I prepared by spending the two years prior writing the screenplay. I know things are generally done in the reverse order, but who am I to go the typical route. Also, the film is in preproduction and scheduled to shoot in December.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
The DIY aspect is what appeals to me. Many other DIY creative activities require more hands on deck, or a certain amount of backing to pull off - film for example. But with writing it’s just me…or you. It’s like DI (all by) Y

What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Forgetting to speelcheck.

If you could be any famous person for one day who would it be and why?
Louis CK. That man is brilliant, and is the most captivating storyteller around today.

What is the oldest thing in the fridge?
A can of Sprite. It’s been in there for years. I just looked and was pretty surprised to find it. I’m pretty sure it won’t be there after lunch…

What can reader expect from you in the future?
Laughs a plenty. I’m planning on putting out a book and a movie every two years.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I absolutely love to read erotic romantic suspense. My first series is about a group of Green Berets who are out of the military and working for a private security firm. However, being a Green Beret is part of who they are as men. I was inspired to use Green Berets as my protagonists because my brother is one, and I am very proud of him and of all of the men and women that serve our country selflessly.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I only write on the weekends. I need to work my day job to pay for my writing habit. Therefore, it takes approximately two and a half months to write a 68000 (estimate) word novel.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love getting to know my characters. I love delving deep into their psyches and learning how they would respond to the world I have created for them. I adore talking to my readers about my book. The ladder is my utmost favorite part!

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Sylvia Day. I want to be inside her mind for a day – to think like she does.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
There are some stuffed shells from a week ago still in my fridge. Thank you for reminding me that I need to toss them into the garbage can.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The third book in The Unit series is slated for release late January 2015. Then I will start on a new erotic romantic suspense series. I love writing erotic romantic suspense. I love combining the danger, the love, the sex, the bad guys (I secretly love torturing bad guys), and the good guys into one novel. I think it makes for an intense escape. That is what I hope to create for my readers: an escape.

After the meteorite wiped out civilization and most of the population, it took thirty years to scrabble together rudiments of society again. Sex is the main currency, for those who haven’t mutated special abilities.

Bethany, a Tech, is able to channel electricity through her body and charge up electronics. When she saves a Shifter girl about to be sold at auction, the girl’s brother, Lucas, offers to repay the debt with his body. While Bethany would love to have Lucas at her beck and call, she’d rather have sex with someone who wanted her as a partner instead of an obligation. But unable to resist the sexy Shifter, she agrees to his terms.

When an opportunity presents itself to travel cross the ravaged countryside to loot the remains of California, Bethany believes this is the best chance for her to find her own brother, a rogue Shifter on the run for a crime he didn’t commit. Lucas wants to go, too, to free his Shifter pack.

The caravan members are expected to provide sexual services to the owners in exchange for passage out and back. As the lines between pleasure and payment become blurred, Bethany struggles to remain human while the pull of the energy feels good enough to leave her meat sack body behind. Can Lucas learn to ground her against the shifting currents?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This was a dream I had. Most of my stories start out as dreams. Basically my sub conscious goes "What if . . . ." before I go to bed and if I'm lucky, I wake up the next morning with a book idea.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I wrote Shifting Currents on and off again for about three years. I originally had it as just Bethany's point of view, but I knew I was missing something, so I tried writing scenes in other peoples point of view to see who would be the best character to tell the story. It turned out it was all of them. I even cut two point of view characters. They're still in the book, but their chapters were cut in editing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating worlds and people and having them interact with each other. I like letting my mind and fingers go and coming up for air two hours later with a new chapter or story.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Getting started. I can procrastinate for hours. I always wait until the last minute to start things and I'm so used to working under the pressure of a deadline, I don't think I can motivate myself without one.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Donald Trump so I could stay in a swanky Manhattan condo and spend lots of money and give lots of money away.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Oh dear, I'm afraid to look. I suspect it's a jar of sundried tomatoes or a bottle of dressing. I'd say it's about a year old. Usually, I'm pretty good about getting rid of the science experiments, but every now and then something slips into the back and doesn't come out until it's time to play the "What stinks in here?" game.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have a new erotic Halloween novella coming out on 10/28. It's called Triad and it's about a vampire, witch and a werewolf engaging in sex magic to beat an incubus at his own game. Also early next year, my erotic parody novel Menage a Musketeers, which is a mash-up of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers with sexy times will be out through Riverdale Avenue Books. It’s a tale of sword and debauchery. All for one and one for all – indeed. It’s a follow-up to my controversial first title Spank Me, Mr. Darcy, which is a mash-up of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and BDSM.

Pregnant, possessed, and in love with a man I don’t dare to trust-those are the consequences of the risks I took to save my life. But Faerie, the land of blood and magic, is filled with bitter ironies, and the bargains I made now threaten me and my unborn child.

The darkly sensual fae noble Rogue still tempts me to danger and desire. As we await the birth of our child, I’ve been forced to question whether our offspring is part of a bargain Rogue once made to save himself. He can’t tell me the truth due to a spell the vicious Queen Titania has him under. Would he betray our family against his will? Could I ever forgive him if he does?

Rogue insists on an eternal commitment from me, even as Titania’s forces close in on us. I don’t know if Rogue and I can withstand her onslaught, or that of the beast within me. But I will not stop looking for answers-even if it brings the walls of Faerie crashing down.

The Second Coming: A Love Story by Scott Pinsker (Theo-Thriller)‏

A nationally-recognized Public Relations expert, Scott Pinsker has worked with professional athletes, musicians, comedians and countless celebs-in-peril, managing everything from crisis communications to reputation management. His analysis of publicity trends and political brand-building tactics has been featured on FOXNews.com, the Washington Times and Jewish World Review.

Pinsker developed the concept for The Second Coming: A Love Story almost 15 years ago, while attending law school in Washington, DC. As the author tells it:

“According to Christian theology, the Devil is thousands of years old and deviously brilliant. I remember wondering one night, if such a creature didn’t want you to know who he was… how would you know? How could you out-think a creature that’s not only smarter than you, but also thousands of years more experienced and capable of supernatural powers? We get fooled by ordinary people every day – and most of the time, they’re not particularly clever! So what prayer would we realistically have to outwit the Prince of Darkness?

Then I had a further thought: If the Devil really wanted to con mankind, he wouldn’t appear with a pitchfork and horns. All those horror movies have it wrong; that’s too obvious. Instead, his best option would be to appear as a holy man – and to attach himself to the faith of his target audience. Because if I were Satan’s publicist, that’s what I’d recommend.

For the last 15 years, I’ve been obsessively researching the subject matter, studying ancient texts and combing through the delicate intricacies of Christian eschatology. The end-result is The Second Coming: A Love Story. You needn’t be a theologist to enjoy this “thought-experiment” but it certainly won’t hurt: I’ve woven-in countless clues and subtle references to the identity of the true Second Coming – and to the identity of Satan – throughout. No matter your faith, no matter your background, this book will challenge you to reconsider the very nature of existence. And that’s the God-honest truth.”

Scott Pinsker lives in Tampa Bay, Florida, with his wife, two young boys, two rescue cats and his 220-pound mastiff. This novel is the first in a trilogy; the follow-up, Three Days Later: A Revenge Story, will be released in 2015.

Two men claim to be the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Each claims the other is Satan in disguise – but only one is telling the truth, and the reader isn’t explicitly told who’s who. The United States soon splits along ideological lines, with Red America swearing allegiance to the conservative “savior” and Blue America (naturally) worshiping at the altar of the other. A furious Culture War-turned-Holy War erupts, with both sides waging a win-at-all-costs marketing campaign to prove their savior’s supremacy.

It’s finally happened: Red America and Blue America are headed for Armageddon!

Adding to the intrigue, the key characters are modernized updates of Bible heroes. For example, Mary Magdalene is recast as Margaret Magdala, Esquire – an unscrupulous attorney who sells her “services” to the highest bidder, until a self-declared savior rescues her from a lifetime of sin.

But was she really saved? Or damned to Hell?

And how well do any of us REALLY know the face of God?

Saving the Hero by Sabrina Sumsion‏

I’m a ninja disguised as a homeschooling mom, former literary publicist, craft-aholic and all around reading diva. Really, I kick down doors –no, wait, that was my husband when I locked us out of the house . . . Well, I engage in combat on a regular basis –online when I play MMORPGs with my children . . . OK, maybe I’m not a real ninja but my husband says I stole his heart. Does that count? No?

Shoot. Well, I love reading and I love writing. I think imagination is the biggest advantage a child can get in life and I try to allow my children many opportunities to expand theirs every day.

I love teaching authors how to avoid publishing traps and scams as well as how to market themselves and their works. There is nothing better in life than giving someone information that helps them become successful.

I also take a few hours each week and create jewelry, make lotions or paint something. I have little creation stations scattered through the house. My daughter gets into it a lot and scatters things which drives my husband crazy but remember how I mentioned that he says I stole his heart? Yeah. I’m not giving it back. He’s stuck with me forever. Bwah ha ha ha!

Two and a half weeks. That’s all the time he has left.

When loner vampire hunter Kassy is interrupted by nosy veteran, Mike, he ends up bitten, and infected with the vampire parasite. The warrior becomes her prey as she fights to find him before powerful vamps. A couple kidnappings later, she’s hiding in a cabin with him chained to the floor, and an eight-year-old girl in her care.

Death? Inevitable. When the parasite takes control, he’ll do or say anything to get non-infected blood—including seducing her. But, as they spend time together, she finds her resolve weakening. A kiss won’t fix him, but it might mend a deep hole in her heart.

Kassy is too practical to believe in miracles, but if he survives eighteen days without ingesting human blood, there is a chance he could be the hero she's been looking for.

Odds are he’s a dead man.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A: The inspiration for Saving the Hero came from reading an article about Jaroslav Flegr, a Czech scientist who is studying the effects of Toxoplasma gondii on humans. His hypothesis is that the parasite affects the way we humans behave. The concept is fascinating and chilling at the same time. How much can a little organism control the actions of the host? Well, that got my old grey matter churning with what-ifs and eventually, I landed on what-if a parasite is the cause of humans acting like vampires. Kick out the whole losing your soul thing in the vampire mythology and a parasite can explain much of what remains.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A: I started writing Saving the Hero last fall. I first wrote it as a writing exercise. It was supposed to be a short story that evolved into a novel without my permission. Ha!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A: My favorite thing about writing is the opportunity to interact with readers. I’m a person that loves people, but it’s hard when you’re a stay at home mom to get adult time. Through my writing, I get to meet and learn about a variety of people that I wouldn’t have met any other way.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A: My least favorite part about writing is editing. It’s a skill that doesn’t come easily to me so I have to work at it. I know that it’s good for me. As I tell my kids all the time, it builds character. But I don’t wanna build character!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A: Oh, sure. Just make me think. Ummmm… I’d say Brandon Sanderson. I’d love to have a set schedule of writing for eight hours each day, have access to all of his editing, character developing and world building knowledge and know what it feels like to win a Hugo.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A: Ha! I have some maple syrup from last year to finish off. However, when you keep it properly, it lasts forever, so it’s not nasty or anything.
Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A: Readers can expect a sequel for Saving the Hero, two or three more parts in the Aliens Are Real series as well as several more novels. I have plans for a mystery series, a dystopian, a high fantasy novel/series and possibly some romantic comedies. As someone who used to help authors gain publicity, market their books and brand themselves, I’m very aware that genre jumping isn’t the best plan, but I write because I love it. If I forced myself to stick to one genre just because it will make money, I know that my writing would suffer and I’d probably stop. I indulge my passion and hope that I can find readers who enjoy the journey with me.

Book Trailer

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was driving home on a long trip very caffeinated and the idea for Aimee’s story came to me. There was no specific inspiration, just an idea that flourished into a paranormal mystery outlining Aimee’s journey.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
10 months

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is when my hands hit the keyboard, I never know what’s going to happen. I have a general idea where I want my story to go but the outline usually changes as I’m writing it but it is always better than what I had outlined. I finish a chapter saying to myself “Wow! That’s great!” and it only came to me as I was writing. There’s no better feeling for a write.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
EDITING. I don’t mind changing the story or taking care of my commas or even finding another better way to say something. But there are only so many times I can read my story before it all starts to blend together and I lose what little foresight I had for the end result.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
JK Rowlings because she’s my author hero. I would love to see what it’s like to live as a famous author – even if just for one day!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Mustard. We love to buy it but never seem to use it all before it expires.
Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Since I began the first book with a bang, I didn’t want to disappoint with the sequel. So the second book starts with a stabbing when a fellow student goes crazy for no apparent reason. Slowly, as the story progresses, everyone around Aimee begins to go mad before slipping into a coma. The next journey is for Aimee to explore her powers to save the ones she loves. Little does she know that an old nemesis has returned to finish what he started in the first book.

The Things You Find at the Dump

I had to take some things to the landfill yesterday--a task I find both repulsive and fascinating.  While throwing my trash into the pile, I happened to notice that there was dog leg laying among the rubble.  It was still covered in the black fur, there wasn't any sign of blood on it, and I'm fairly certain the bone was poking out of the top, but I didn't get too close to examine.  I didn't want to risk a disease (and not necessarily from the leg.  The rest of the trash is crawling with pathogens too).

I contemplated taking a picture to share with you, but I figured that might be disturbing, so I didn't.  Sorry to those who wanted to see it!

It got me wondering:  Where is the rest of the dog?  Who would have put that in the trash in the first place?  What kind of person has a dog leg that can be thrown away?  What happened to separate the dog from his leg?

It crossed my mind later that the leg could have possibly come from a taxidermied animal, but all the same questions still apply.  It was the oddest thing ever.

And that, my friends, is how horror stories are born.

When Life Gets Tough

This month has been an emotional roller coaster.  There have been several deaths that have occurred recently, and it's been difficult to deal with.  We are taking things day by day and one step at a time.

I've never really been into poetry, most of the time it is way over my head.  However, I admire those who can write it.  In times of sadness and in death, there is always one poem that help me through.  I find comfort in Dylan Thomas's words.

Do not go gentle into that good night

Dylan Thomas, 1914 - 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Seven Seeds of Summer follows the story of Summer, a college art student who has grown up in a house full of Greek mythology and legends. Summer grew up with a love for the darkest of all Gods: Hades, which caused tension between her and her mother. Summer comes home to Point Judith, Rhode Island, to find a mysterious figure on their family beach. The figure comes to her with questions about a familiar myth of her childhood: of Persephone and Hades. He proceeds to tell her of a new version of the story with a different ending that Summer never knew; an ending that includes herself.

A trip to Greece leads to tragic twists, leaving Summer in the arms of the strange figure whom she had met before. He takes her on a whirlwind through the busy streets of Athens, to the lowest point of Greece where his lair awaits: The Underworld. Determined to find out the secret of herself and her piece in the story, Summer goes with him, and tries to make herself at home in his world.

Summer has to decide to follow her heart or follow the same footsteps of the mysterious woman in her past life.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
The story of Summer and Hades came to me in the middle of the night one night. I had just presented a story-board of a different novel that I was thinking about writing in the present Novel Class I was enrolled in, at Susquehanna University. It hadn’t gone as well as I had wanted, and knew that I needed to come up with a novel idea that I could write, wanted to write - and might actually become a book in the end. I never envisioned Seven Seeds of Summer actually becoming a published novel. I’ve grown up with retellings of Fairy Tales, and really love reading them - and I wanted to do the same thing. I remembered reading the Myth in High School, and realized not a lot of people have written about Hades and Persephone. It would be something fresh and new - and I jumped on it!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It took me a little over 4 years. I started in my Junior year of college and often, sat on the story for periods of time. I’d be inspired and write, and then sometimes, I just wouldn’t be. I finally made the decision, with a lot of encouragement, to finish it - and here we are!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love expressing the pent up feelings that I have - expressing parts of myself that I might be able to in my real day-to-day life. I can escape into another person and live certain things, say certain things that I’d never be able to do as just Chantal. I love developing characters and building a setting. Writing is an escape for me, to be someone else, to do things I normally wouldn’t do, and to be able to come back to myself and my world whenever I want.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing. Period. Hands down - editing. I hate editing. I hate having to go over things again and again and again. I hate when you’re trying to write something and it just doesn’t come out as fluidly or as descriptive as you imagine in your mind. I often find myself frustrated when someone might say to me, “I just can’t see the place or person,” and I stare at the page like, “But I can see it!” It’s just one of those things that I struggle with as a writer.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I think it would have been amazing to be Walt Disney for the day. To have a huge empire the way that he did (and still does), and to be able to go to work, knowing that you’re going to the most Magical Place on Earth? Yes please. Sign me up for that. He impacted so many lives, (mine included.) It would have been a wondrous thing to be him, to experience at least the way he thought, the way he created and the way he dreamed.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Fruit. And I’d say it’s probably like 3 weeks old. Ew, I know. I gotta just throw it away.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Hopefully piles of books. Piles and Piles of Books. At least I can say that in the near-future, Seven Seeds of Summer will be an Audiobook! That is something that readers, at least, can expect from me very soon!

Her hundred-year penance lifted, Shadow Bearer Brenna Baudouin returns to the Earthly plane with her partner, Gray Warlow, to keep the peace between humans and supernatural creatures—and to prevent another apocalyptic war from happening.

The attraction between them is nearing a critical point, but their checkered history has left Brenna unable to trust either her heart or her instincts.

It’s chaotic business as usual until humans begin turning to statues of dust. There is no explanation, no sign of magical foul play or a biological toxin. The humans are convinced it’s the work of a deviant supernatural faction, twisting the knife in the already tense relationship between their species. Brenna and Gray agree—the deaths have a former comrade-turned-rogue stamped all over them.

In a race against time, they enlist the help of both friend and foe to save the human race and stop the impending civil war. Along the way, they are forced to come to terms with their past and decide, once and for all, whether they will come together or fall apart.

Warning: Contains a heroine who knows her weapons but not her own heart, an outbreak of supernatural proportions, copious bloodletting, and a race to save an endangered species—humans. All tied up in a tight bow of sexual tension.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Fading Light is the second book in the Shadow Born Series. I really wanted to do something different with this one. I brainstormed for a long time, trying to come up with a situation that would raise the stakes for all the characters, and allow the readers to see how they react under immense pressure. My hope is that Fading Light will leave you with a deeper connection, not just to the characters, but to the crisis they’re facing.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft took about two months. The edits took quite a bit longer.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Writing lets me tell the stories that are constantly streaming through my head (sounds crazy doesn’t it?). I love everything about the creative process, from beginning to end (even editing).

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Saying goodbye to a manuscript and calling it done. It always seems like there is something more that needs changed, or another scene that needs to be written.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I never know how to answer this question. Right now, I’d love to be Diana Gabaldon, so I could visit the set of Outlander. How awesome would that be?

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have a toddler, so that’s a really dangerous questions. Right now, it’s some leftover pasta I made last week. Nothing too nasty.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The next book in the Shadow Born Series, Piercing the Darkness, will be coming out next Spring, as well as the paperback version of Shadows of Fate. I also have a secret project I’m really excited about.

Serpent on a Cross is Book One in a Jewish fantasy adventure series set in Medieval Eastern Europe.

Available at Amazon and BN

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This book started out as a 10-page response to a fiction writing prompt when I was earning my MA in Creative Writing.

When I had to choose a topic for my thesis in fiction, I wanted something that combined my love of magic, mythology and history. That 10-page writing prompt held bits of those elements. When I approached my mentor with the idea, he suggested that instead of writing Western European (British, Irish, Scottish) fantasy, I pull from my own heritage, which gave me several different choices.

Since I’ve been researching my Jewish roots for the past several years, I decided to go that direction. I also wanted to write a strong, spirited, female, Jewish protagonist; one who refused to be oppressed by the predominant “Christian” society in which she lived. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
From its inception as the aforementioned writing prompt response, when my writing mentor (who is himself a prolific, published author) took the story and me under his wing and whipped us into shape, until he pronounced it to be of publishable quality, was about two and a half years.

This included the foundation for the story – outlining every chapter, researching any and all historical references for accuracy (such as medieval medicine, Jewish esotericism, daily life in medieval Poland and Kievan Rus, etc.), creating character profiles, as well as the usual “down and dirty” editing and proofreading.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Other than the writing itself, research is my favorite thing about writing. Especially when writing medieval anything. Researching the people, places and language and dialect you’re going to be writing about is very important. You want to be sure to not only do those things justice, you want your book to at least APPEAR that you know what you’re talking about.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Outlining. I hate outlines and they’re not too fond of me. When I had to write essays in college and turn the outline in prior to the final due date, I’d write the essay first then write the outline based on the essay. It’s backward, I know, but I’m more of a pantser in my writing than a planner. The only reason I plan NOW, is because my mentor basically drummed it into me for two and a half years.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d like to be Rhonda Tollefson, Oded Fehr’s wife. Because I love Oded Fehr and am jealous of his wife.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I clean out the fridge pretty regularly. At least every couple of months. Just now, organic peanut butter that expired March 12th, 2014, is the oldest thing in the fridge.

(And now it’s not in there anymore because I just threw it out. So thanks for that.)

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m currently working on the sequel to Serpent on a Cross, working title: Veil of Menace, and have plans for a third book in the series. I also have a few other Shiny New Ideas percolating.

Bespoken by Marie Michelle Coleman

Marie Michelle Coleman is a paranormal romance and urban fantasy author whose book, Bespoken, is the first in the Nightangel and Daydreamer series. She's been in love with the written word since she was old enough to turn the pages of her first book. She's always had a fascination with vampires and angels. Sitting down at the keyboard and turning on the paranormal blender was a natural next step.

Marie lives in the Washington D.C. area. She believes in the power of a compelling dream, the therapeutic merits of loud music, and the benefits of always being in the middle of reading a great book. Marie has a soft spot for a good romance and likes to laugh. Jane Austen is her favorite author. She'll probably always be a little in love with Mr. Darcy.

She grows roses in her garden but no matter how hard she tries, they don't look anything like the ones in Casey Sloane's daydreams.

Nobody ever told Casey how dangerous a little daydreaming could be.

Casey Sloane appreciates the power of a good daydream. It’s the perfect antidote to the pressures of her hectic life as an associate attorney at a high-powered Washington, D.C. law firm. When the nightangel Gabriel takes up residence in those dreams, Casey is more delighted than surprised. Gabriel is the perfect mixture of danger, otherworldly beauty, and out-and-out temptation required to throw her daydreams into a state of perpetual overdrive.

But when the nightangel sheds his wings and arrives in the real world for a real-time relationship with Casey, she gets a quick education on the unforeseen consequences of secret daydreams.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) Like Casey Sloane, I’m an experienced daydreamer. My understanding of what daydreaming is made of sparked the idea of writing about a daydream gone awry. Of course, my daydreams pale in comparison to Casey’s dreams. I’ve never had even one nightangel turn up in them. (I feel a bit jealous about that sometimes.)

I also loved the idea of writing about someone with a demanding career who daydreams as a form of stress-relief. The daydreamer’s experience in context to the demands of a stressful career path is an interesting counterpoint. My love of the paranormal was a perfect fit for this scenario. Who better to turn up in Casey Sloane’s daydreams than a nightangel with an agenda?

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) The short answer is that it took a long time. I started the book when my children were small and then put it away for many years. Although life interrupted me a few times, even when I could have picked it up again, I didn’t. Something within me must have known I needed to wait so I could write the book the way it really needed to be written. Once I did pick it up again, I couldn’t stop writing. I wrote the drafts for the first three books before I turned my attention to editing and polishing the first book in the series, Bespoken. All this writing, editing, and polishing was done over a number of years while I navigated my overstuffed life. Having so many time constraints slowed me down and sometimes that has really frustrated me. During my most impatient times, I try to remind myself to enjoy the writing journey. That seems to help.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) The way the story unfolds on the empty page staring me in the face and those magical aha moments. I love it when a character surprises me by doing something I wasn’t planning they ever do or refuses to undertake a course of action I was dead set on. Seeing a character take on a real sense of substance is exciting to me because at that point I know I’m doing something right.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) Editing. It’s grueling but necessary. Editing in painful. It requires a ruthless hand. There are times when you have to yank out a sentence, paragraph, or whole section that you love for the greater good of the book. I keep an archive document with my cuts in it so I know I can go back and get my lost words if I want. It’s much easier for me to let them go that way.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) I’d like to say Elizabeth Bennett (I’d really like to meet Mr. Darcy) but since she’s not real (and he’s not either), I can’t. I’m tempted to switch immediately over to Jane Austen from there just to get the chance to experience her world her way, at least for 24 hours. But that seems like an easy answer. I’m going to choose Amelia Earhart instead. She pushed a lot of boundaries and she was brave where I wouldn’t be – up in the sky. I’m not much on heights or that level of risk. Being Amelia Earhart for even 24 hours would definitely push my envelope and teach me a little bit about the pluses and minuses of risk-taking.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) A package of Cajun spices for making Mardi Gras dip. It’s spicy, spicy, spicy - so a little pinch goes a long way. Consequently, we’re still making delicious dips from this packet a couple years after it traveled home with us. I love New Orleans and the food there. Every time we whip up that Cajun dip, it’s like taking a quick visit to NOLA without having to jump on a plane. We got the dip mix at this great shop and cooking school called Crescent City Cooks.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) I’m working on Book 2 and 3 in the Nightangel and Daydreamer series. Expect more from Casey Sloane and the nightangel Gabriel. The romance and adventure is just getting going for them. You may get to visit Casey’s daydream world again. You never know what you’ll find there. You’ll certainly be meeting other members of the paranormal community in Washington, DC. The books will retain their sense of humor because I’m kind of a smartass sometimes.

Cheyenne Zombie Fest

Yesterday, I participated in the Cheyenne Zombie Fest.  It was a lot of fun, and I would definitely do it again.

This was the 4th year this celebration has been going on, but I only recently heard about it.  I contacted the organizer and asked if I could sell my books there, and he set me up at a table with another author.  Her name was Jill Pope, and she wrote Haunted Cheyenne.  It was fun to talk about ghosts!

My youngest was incredibly helpful in taking this picture.

There were quite a few people who dressed up, both as zombies and zombie hunters.  There were even people there from Cheyenne's Umbrella Corporation (the boys loved these guys because they looked like Army soldiers).  I didn't take as many photos as I wanted, but I had a blast!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay all day.  I only stayed for a few hours.  I didn't sell any books, but I was able to network with Matt Mogk, who happens to be the founder of the Zombie Research Society and guest of honor.  My book manager contacted him recently to review Undead Obsessed, which he said he would, so I wanted to thank him and also talk zombies.  He was a really nice guy.

I'll admit it, I geeked out a little.  But it didn't seem to bother him.  I mean, he didn't shy away from me or call security, so I figured that was a good sign.  I probably talked his ear off, but he humored me.

All in all, I had a great time at the festival, and if they have it again next year, I'm going to make a point to stay all day!

I dance, rock climb, and have mastered MMA, because just being a twenty-six-year-old doctor isn’t enough. It doesn’t keep me from remembering the terrifying night my life changed, the night my true love died. I was nearly seventeen.

Life goes on, but the secret I keep is that I still talk to him in my dreams. That was getting me by until Tabron showed up—or, more specifically, until the six-foot-two brute of a Viking whisked me off to another planet because his leader is dying. And the joy didn’t end there. I’m being forced to choose a mate. The Brausa are facing extinction.

Tabron has no need for a mate, himself, and he’s told me as much. Multiple times. What he does have are hands and wicked lips that stir feelings I thought lost forever. Choosing him (just to play along until I can find a way home) seems to irk him and I find this surprisingly fun. But surviving a hidden conspiracy and the dangers of this alien place might be more difficult than I could ever imagine…
