Jennifer Ainsley by Sidney Stone‏

Sidney Stone is a hiker, deer whisperer and non-pretentious wine connoisseur. An addicted reviewer on Yelp, he is also creator of affordable housing (although technically he is homeless part-time), thinks The Replacements are the best band of the Eighties and loves to boost his LinkedIn count with people he doesn't know.

He lives in both Northern and Southern California while constantly traveling to Orange County to visit his son, who can now beat his father at ping pong and chess rather easily (and is charmingly arrogant while doing it). A graduate of UC Irvine and Pepperdine University, Sidney wishes he chose at least one university to attend that had a college football team to root for.

The first scene Sidney thought of for Jennifer Ainsley: The Final Demon War included a rather large massacre (take that for what it is worth). However, inspired by the works of Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Clive Barker; the book's violence is offset by dark humor and deep human emotion just like in real life where Sidney's darkness is offset by creatively placed sarcasm and an overwrought romanticism. For example, while Jennifer Ainsley: The Final Demon War is a Fantasy-Horror novel, Sidney also still tears up at the end of both Field of Dreams and An Officer and a Gentleman.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This story has been with me for a long while. The inspiration for the character was a combination of an older “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, Sydney Bristow from the TV show “Alias”, and a combination of backgrounds from people I know. I wrote 4 screenplays in the 90’s and, well life got in the way and I did not pursue writing like I should have. But I always loved to write, and again, this story just wanted to come out.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft of Jennifer Ainsley took me 8 months to write. It was absolutely terrible and no one will ever read that. The second draft took another two months and with that version I had graduated to merely sucky. Draft #2 I allowed three friends, who I call my Gorgeous and Intelligent Readers, to review and give me honest critical feedback. Another draft later, I gave it to a friend who is a professional writing for editing. Once the manuscript had reached the level of mediocre, I used the professional editing services of Createspace Publishing who gave me wonderful feedback and two more drafts later, I actually had a professionally edited book that I think, and initial reviews reflect, an outstanding and entertaining tale.

So from beginning to end, 22 months. This is not a book that took 30 days to write and it was been edited and vetted by numerous people before I decided to share it with the world (Or at least the few hundred people who have bought it so far).

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
When you really nail it, when you know it is good, and you cannot wait to share it with other people. That’s the best thing about writing. I love telling stories and I want other people to hear them.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Trying to find consistent time. I cannot give away my day job yet so I have to fit in writing in those nooks and crannies of life that are otherwise unoccupied. Being a single father, trying to maintain my health and having a social life, it gets tough to squeeze the writing time in.

The other bad thing is the promotion, no offense ;) I’d rather spend this time writing.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
It would have to be Jesus. Son of God for starters. Unending food and wine? I’m in. Doing miracles and helping others? Saving souls? What could be better??!! That would be my choice but yeah; the end of the first act is a bit of a downer. At least there is a great ending.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Fridge, there is a full thing of milk about a month past its expiration date that I need to throw out. Such a waste.
In the freezer, I think I have an 18 month old package of frozen corn. More waste, sigh.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
My next novel is the sequel to Jennifer Ainsley: The Final Demon War. It will be titled: Jennifer Ainsley: This Time We Really Mean It, The Final war (Just kidding). The next book is Jennifer Ainsley: The End and the Beginning. Even more epic and encompassing, if I can pull this off it will essentially be my The Stand. Only with more humor and emotion. And maybe more severed heads…

Covenant by Sabrina Benulis‏

Sabrina Benulis graduated with a Masters in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. She currently resides in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania with her husband Mike, and her spoiled cockatiel Caesar. COVENANT is the follow-up to ARCHON, her first novel.

https://www.facebook.com/SabrinaBenulis
https://twitter.com/sabrinabenulis

The haunting gothic tale started in Archon continues-a mesmerizing work of the paranormal in which a young woman discovers that she is caught in a labyrinth of intrigue where angels, demons, and all the creatures between Heaven and Hell will stop at nothing to possess her.

A year ago, Angela Mathers, a talented artist with a tortured soul, enrolled at the Westwood Academy and encountered the angels who haunted her dreams. Then she discovered the dark truth … she is the Archon, a being of supreme power who will determine the fate of the universe. But with such power comes great danger, and for every force seeking to aid Angela there is another burning to stop her. After a scheming demon kidnaps the Book of Raziel, Angela must find her way through a nightmarish game and enter the Door to Hell to rescue her only friend before it is too late.

The perilous fate of both Heaven and Hell rests on her success.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Covenant is the second novel in The Books of Raziel series, but in terms of the plot, I was inspired a lot by some of my favorite fantasy movies throughout the years. I thought often of other scenes and images from such films that really stuck with me. When it comes to the characters, though, Angela and Sophia's strong friendship was meant to be an ode to some of the strong female friendships that would feature in anime I've watched and enjoyed.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Covenant took both a long time and a short time to write--if that makes any sense. The development part of the novel took a while. The first draft I wrote didn't quite work, mostly because it was taking the story in a direction it could no longer go in considering how much it has evolved over time. After that I felt a bit trapped, but then all the pieces just began to fall into place. Once I had them, it took a relatively short time to rewrite the novel. If you want a mean average of time, I would say a year and a half for everything total.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is that I can create whatever I want: people, worlds, and stories. Writing frees your imagination. It's almost like you're the god of the little world and circumstances you make.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The worst part of writing can ironically be when your work gets into the public eye, and--this is always bound to happen to some degree--not everyone feels the same magic you're feeling. Writers, like any other soul with artistic sensibilities, can be very sensitive about anything that has to do with their novels. Novels are like an author's children, and of course parents always want other people to dote and fawn over their children.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Maybe Kate Middleton. She's royalty now, wears cute dresses, and seems to have a somewhat decently normal life (though that life still has mansions, and castles, and crowns no matter which way you look at it)!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A carton of Egg Beaters. It's way too old. From all the way back in Fall of 2013. Why I keep forgetting to throw it out, I don't know. I think I'm afraid it will explode in the garbage bag and leak everywhere!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I think I'll always be, first and foremost, a speculative fiction writer, but I have so many ideas for future novels and they are all quite different from one another. I suppose it will depend on what story speaks most powerfully to me when the time comes to sit down and develop another book series. In the end it's safe to say--anything's possible!

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) I’d say I was always a writer in my soul ... my blood is Irish. We are the original storytellers of yore. Other than that, my ‘unique’ life filled me with experiences, good and bad that made me grow into a person who always asks why and what if … two questions a writer needs to ask before writing a story.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) The original MS took 30 days, then I spent 3 months editing it.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) Sprinkling throughout my stories little clue and hints about characters, spin-offs, linked series, giving signs of their deeper selves and motives. Pointers on what’s to come and highlights on what to read carefully and remember … it will show up again. Always forcing the plot to thicken.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) LOL I’m an Author at heart. I can’t think of anything I dislike about the craft. Maybe grammar.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) LOL, been there done that. I retired from a successful modeling career and an adventurous jet-set lifestyle to set the world on fire with my erotic romance books.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) Pickles. 2 weeks.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) I’m currently polishing book two of this series and have rough drafts for books three through six. Book seven is still on the drawing board. I also have plans for a second series that will be a spin-off of this one.

I’d like to say thank you for having me here. I appreciate the time you’ve given me to introduce myself to your readers and fans. It’s been fun.

Exodus: A Requiem for Jacob Forlorn by lazarusInfinity‏

"Just keep writing." Out of those simple words grew a dream that would instill a profound sense of purpose within a young kid born and raised in New Orleans, LA. With only his dreams along with an insatiable drive to be the best he could be, this writer would grow from penning children's literature in the 3rd grade to later writing stageplays and screenplays in college. Heavily influenced by a who's who of incredible writers from Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Ralph Ellison all the way to August Wilson, Arthur Miller and Aaron Sorkin, lazarusInfinity has continued to stretch his creative boundaries to encompass all forms of writing. In addition to writing contemporary fiction and children's stories, he is currently at work on several screenplays along with another novel.

**The sequel to EXODUS, REVELATION: THE RETURN OF JACOB FORLORN is also now available at all major retailers.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
EXODUS: A REQUIEM FOR JACOB FORLORN is a character study loosely based on relationship horror stories that I’ve either witnessed or heard about from friends of mine. We’ve all heard stories or watched movies about women who’ve had their hearts broken and lost themselves in bad relationships. Very rarely is that story told from the point of view of a man getting the short end of the stick. I thought it was about time to tell a fictional story about a guy who tries to do the right things with the wrong women. What would happen to a guy who’s betrayed in the worst possible way? What would become of that man if he was destroyed by love coupled with nightmares and supernatural visions? What would it drive him to?

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The book was written in about 4 months. Once I get a premise going, I’ll start writing character biographies and the outline of the story. Once that’s done, I’m ready to go.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
With writing much like acting, you can be anyone and create anything. It’s all on you. The best part about writing is that moment when the characters come to life and begin to tell you where the story is going.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Nothing at all. This is a part of what I was put here to do.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
That’s an easy one. Back when I was studying acting in high school, there was a good friend of mine whom I haven’t seen in years that was in the same class. We studied everything from Shakespeare to Chaplin and Japanese theater, and always fantasized about making it as actors. While I lost focus over the years, he went on to study acting at Juilliard and worked both on and off Broadway. To date, he’s worked with everyone from Clint Eastwood to Spike Lee. Seeing him up on the big screen enjoying the level of success he’s accomplished in his life not only makes me proud but inspires me to want to one day get back into actor’s training. Being a Hollywood star is not a goal of mine anymore, but to be able to get trained again and get back up on the stage and hold my own would be a great accomplishment.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
6 month old baking soda. I try to keep a light fridge. Living in New Orleans, it’s so easy to lose yourself in all the good food and gain weight.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m currently working on a novel entitled PORN AGAIN, which is loosely based on my years of working in adult retail.

SYNOPSIS:

“What’s it like working in a sex store?”

That’s a question that Harper ‘Happy’ Downman will soon learn the meaning of…in more ways than one.

The poster child for middle-class America, Happy is your typical button-down, conservative Christian American with a quaint home, a lovely wife and a dull sex life. At the height of the Great Recession, a drastic turn of events in both his personal and professional life rocks Happy’s world to its very core. All seems lost…that is until his lecherous older brother comes to the rescue with a ‘stimulating’ solution that’s sure to raise more than just eyebrows within his eccentric family.

Relocating to the decadent, hedonistic streets of New Orleans, he soon finds that he’s way out of his league. In a world of porn, sex toys and interesting characters, Happy takes a memorable journey of sex, love and relationships that he will never forget.

Porn Again is a funny and insightful romp proving that it’s not always the people who work in a sex store that you have to worry about. Sometimes it’s the people who shop there.

Read it with someone you ****…

The book will be out in mid April and available at all major retailers. Feel free to sign up for updates at my website www.lazarusinfinity.net for more info on preorders as they come in. Along with this, I’m also working on a screenplay entitled OCCUPATION which is based on a short story I published about a zombie apocalypse hitting New Orleans right in the middle of the Super Bowl/Mardi Gras.

Eternal Mixture by Shevaun DeLucia

Shevaun DeLucia lives in upstate New York with her husband, four children, and two dogs. As a stay-at-home mom while her children were young, she fell in love with reading. She indulged in the small moments that took her away from the reality of her loud, overly rambunctious household, bringing her into a world of fantasy. When reading wasn’t enough to satisfy her, she turned to writing, determined to create the perfect ending of her own.

If you had the chance to start your life over, would you take it? If you were told you would live for eternity, would you embrace it? If a stranger told you he was your soul mate, would you believe it?

Raina Richmond has played it safe her entire life. She has never broken the rules. That is, until Brent Alexander walked straight into her life, causing havoc. Turning her world upside down.

Brent is the new kid in town. He is every girl’s fantasy: adorable, charming, chiseled, and the typical boy Raina usually steers clear of. But there is just something about him she can’t seem to resist. Safe is no longer an option for her. For him, she breaks all the rules.

What she doesn’t realize is that he holds the key to her past, present, and future. Once he reveals the reasons behind their irrevocable connection, she will unlock the answers to all of her questions, and her life as she knows it will never be the same again.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I actually was enrolled in a short story English course at the community college to help with my writing. The professor gave us topics to write stories about. That’s when the idea for this story was created; except at the time, the short story was titled The Chosen One.

After the course was over with, I constantly thought about the story. I couldn’t get Brent and Raina out of my mind. It was almost as if the story was calling to me, wanting to be told. I knew their story wasn’t finished, so I gave into the need and began typing.

Once the story took full form, the title didn’t quite fit. It had to be changed. Eternal Mixture was thought of late one night before falling asleep; that’s when a good amount of my ideas seem to take place. The one thing I was absolutely sure of was that the paranormal would have its place in this book.

I love anything to do with vampires, werewolves, and immortals. Throw a love story in the mix, and I’m sold. The idea of living for eternity fascinates me. It evokes a desire that I wish I could fulfill, and with my creativity and writing, I have! I can now live vicariously through Brent and Raina forever.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Between working full time, having four kids at home, and trying to tend to normal house/mom duties, it took me exactly a year to write Eternal Mixture. I know. A year is a very long time, but writing for hours at a time is not an option for me. If I do happen to get more than thirty minutes in one sitting, it most likely happens late at night when everyone is in bed.

To be honest, I don’t even know how I managed to find the time to write Eternal Mixture! But I did, and it was well worth any of my extra time. I don’t think of writing as work; I think of it more as a necessity, like water or air. I need it to survive. It’s just part of me now.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The creativity. The challenge. The ability to witness my characters taking form and watching them blossom gives me such gratification. It’s almost like watching your own child grow right in front of your eyes.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I would have to say the writer’s block. We all get it at one point or another, and it completely sucks! The only way to knock through the blocked wall is to get away and then come back with a bulldozer to tear it down. Time away is the key.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would have to say Kim Kardashian. I know what some of you must be thinking. Haha! I had the same thoughts when typing this name. But I am dying to know what it’s like to have your own zip code for a booty!

On a serious note, though, Stephanie Meyer would be an awesome person to be for a day. She not only wrote amazing books, but she was able to help with producing the movies for them as well. I think that’s every author’s dream. To experience that for a day would be amazing!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Hmmm … I would have to say the oldest thing in my fridge would be the big tobacco sauce bottle. I purchased it from the wholesale club BJ’s, and it was well worth the purchase. Lol. It seems like it has lasted forever.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I expect to release the second and third books of the Eternal Mixture series. Woohooo! I’m about two chapters into the second one so far. Beyond this, I am dying to dip myself into some adult romance. I already have some ideas put aside for this once the Eternal Mixture series is closed, and I’m stoked!

Walking through life to the beat of her own drum, she has worked in a PR Agency, small companies, a big consortium and even in the Military. But none of it could ever compare to the adventures of creating and building up her characters and stories. M.E. believes that books are for smoothing out everyone's feathers and reminding people all the things they've already forgotten. She is happily married, oftentimes engaging her husband in her writing, with or without his consent. Keegan Callaghan knows the taste of loss. Fate has severely tried him; first by taking away his parents when he was but a child, then destiny didn't spare him the heartache of losing the woman he loved, when she fell victim to vicious killers who were after him.

He is a man, but not human.

At least that's not all there is to him.

There is a savage side to his nature, a werewolf like creature that most would attribute with folklore or a myth. Troubled by his own animalistic tendencies he has a hard time accepting and haunted by vicious memories, he decides to leave his home in Ireland and move to the US, where his mother was from.

But the quiet town of Chastity Point, Connecticut is not what it seems.

Jade Thorton is trying to lead the life she always dreamed of having. She owns a bakery, has friends, and a loyal dog, which seems to be fully satisfying after the traumatic experience of her childhood that casts a long shadow on her whole life.

The last thing she expects is to find herself thrown back into the past by the events taking part in the small town when blood is being spilled in rural Chastity Point.

The fascination she feels for the mysterious man with eyes full of painful secrets could be her chance for happiness, or her final downfall…

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
It would be hard to pinpoint exactly one thing, or a reason. My love affair with paranormal started with vampires, but so far i haven't given them a single story yet. Werewolves and shapeshifters have always held my fascination for being primal and earthy. They've felt much more real to me than the more sophisticated vampires at the time.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
This one literally poured out of me, it had taken me a little less than two months, give or take.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating characters from scratch, clothing them in qualities and personality. It has always felt like magic to me. This power to shape story and lead it as I see fit. I like how everything comes together and heads toward the end. I enjoy disobedience of said characters, their will to do as they please, although it tends to drive me to the brink of insanity more often than not.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The end. Every novel is different, as well as characters. You spent time getting to know them, you love some of them from the get-go, it takes longer to get attached to others, the same rules apply to people in real life. You wish them the best, and I find it hard to let them go and move onto a new project. Writing this trilogy was fun, because I got to spend more time with all the characters, maybe understand some of their choices a little bit better than I did at the time while I was writing their individual stories.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I wouldn't exactly choose one famous person. I would like to be an actor just to see how it feels to be so many people and still manage to be myself at the end of the day when all the lights and make-up is gone. It could be interesting, and definitely not longer than for one day.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
That would be Aloe Vera juice and it's been there at least for 2 years, it's reminiscent of my fascination with what I call my 'Ayurveda period.' The only reason it is still there is because I am a little bit afraid to open it and check contents, and too curious to just throw away without checking first.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I feel special affiliation with Paranormal Romance genre, but it doesn't mean I won't write Contemporary for example. In fact after the 'Chastity Point' trilogy that is my plan exactly. A story I've been carrying within for some time now. Then back to Paranormal, and I will have to heed very insistent voices of twin males trouble-makers, or -solvers, depends on point of view, who are demanding their own stories... Yes, I have plans and ideas. Hopefully time will come for all of them.

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller's dog-walking business on Manhattan's exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim--and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit--cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan's elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

Eve hadn’t wanted a second marriage, she wanted to remain happily unmarried rather than curse another good man to Rob’s fate. If only Tul had listened to her protestations. Instead the Senate are intent on making her relive her own personal hell. Worse, the instrument they seem intent on using to bring about her suffering is the creature, the merciless drone they’d created from all that remained of Rob.

The world seems to be conspiring against Eve and the Alliance, and even among Johan’s band of rebels not everyone is happy to have Eve as part of the group. With Tul missing and friends few on the ground, Eve begins to slip back into the pit of despair which had once consumed her and that may just lead her to behave more recklessly than ever before. Mistakes have consequences however, and for Eve the consequences of her actions may just decide the course of the future.

Is there a way to save Tul? Does anything of Rob remain in the Senate controlled puppet his body’s become? More importantly, why are the Senate determined to take control of Eve and just how far will they go to gain possession of her?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Allegiance: The Vampire Alliance Book Two was written because there was so much more to the story and the world than I could fit into Absolution: The Vampire Alliance Book One. It develops that story, takes it to new levels, and explains more of ‘why’ the events of Absolution happened while also giving the main character a wider set of problems.

The series as a whole, if I’m honest, was developed first and foremost because I’d read every vampire book in the paranormal romance and urban fantasy sections of my local bookshop. I needed a new story and wanted something gritty and local so I decided to write my own book. I quickly realized I had a story to tell, a story that incorporated a mythology I’d developed years ago. Then I realized that the story I wanted to tell needed more than one book to do it justice.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
To write this one took me three month to write the first draft then I let it sit while I wrote the first draft of book three, then came three months of re-writing, editing, etc. There’s about six months of work in Allegiance: The Vampire Alliance Book Two. Book One, Absolution, took three years so Allegiance was done quite quickly really!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating a new world and new characters. Writing is a great way to experience things you can’t in real life, much like reading. It’s an adventure.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing. It’s a soul destroying task. However, not as soul destroying as realizing you’ve missed a typo in your finished manuscript so it really is worth spending a lot of time going through any writing with a fine tooth comb.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Dead or alive? If I’m allowed to choose a dead person then Anne Boleyn, although not on the day of her execution. I’d like to know the truth about what she saw in Henry VIII and what it was like to be such a strong willed queen in a dangerous court.

Alive? J K Rowling. It might be my only opportunity to experience being a famous author!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Milk, it’s been there a week and a half. We forgot to bin it before we went away to visit family and we’ve only returned home tonight.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Antithesis: The Vampire Alliance Book Three which will be released later in 2014. It’s the end of this story arc and after Antithesis I’m not really sure if I’ll be doing sequels, prequels, spin offs or something entirely new as I have plans for all of the above.

Characters Welcome

I'm a character girl, so for me the tagline of the USA Network has become something of a mantra. I was thinking about it the day I thought of Cassie, and I've been thinking about it ever since as I've tried to figure out what makes a great character.

For me, the real key to a character isn't in her strengths – it's in her weaknesses. And I'm talking about something more than the idea that readers get annoyed by perfect characters so you need to program in flaws. That's true, and yet those flaws need to mean something. They need to matter.

My favorite books involve character growth and change. I think part of the reason that I generally like series more than stand-alone books is that they give a character the opportunity to do just this. Oh, you can put some change into a single volume, but I find that if I truly love a character, I also love to spend time with him or her. The most memorable characters for me are the ones I spent at least three books with, and the ones who earned the need for at least three books through meaningful growth.

My favorite series at the moment is The Dresden Files. We're on book 13... 14... I've started to lose track a bit but I don't mind. He can write thirty books for all I care, as long as Harry keeps changing based on the things that happen to him.

I like the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning for much the same reason. After I finished this series I went back to the first and reread them, amazed by the “pink” version of the heroine who still didn't realize how much evil there was in the world who had seamlessly gone to black by the fifth book.

When it came to my own series, I wanted a reaction like that. I wanted Cassie to somehow be fundamentally different in the final book. To have learned something important. I started with a flaw – no magic in a family of sorcerers – and then built the story toward a final conclusion. My goal wasn't to have her find hidden magical powers, but to become okay with not having any. Strangely enough, as Cassie grew so did I. The final point I ended up making was not exactly the one I thought I would make when I got started.

Maybe that's part of the key to a great character too. I don't know, the answer is still a work in progress. I know one when I see one, and if the library system would let me have my way I'd dispense with the genre categories we have now. Give me a great character and I don't care if it's fantasy, mystery, literaray, or historical. Characters welcome!

It Happens to Everyone

One of the highlights of my trip to AWP was listening to Ursula Le Guin do a reading and interview.  She was paired with Molly Gloss, who I'd never heard of before, but I'm now very intrigued to read her work.

Of the many things Ursula talked about, one was the contribution to the genre of science fiction and fantasy.  The interviewer asked her if it had been her intention to bring feminism to the genre, and she replied it wasn't.  She just wanted to write, and the men in the field were doing it wrong.  It was hilarious and insightful.

I think one of the points she was trying to make was that she wasn't trying to change conventions or define what it meant to be a woman writer in the genre.  I think she was just trying to write the stories she wanted to write and the other things fell into place.  She writes because she enjoys writing.  It was very inspiring.

She also talked about how important it was to have a writer's group that was willing to give honest feedback for a work.  It was the only way to get better.  She had been with her group for a long time (I can't remember exactly how long, but I want to 20+ years), and they were very good at inspiring and pushing each other to be the very best.

I appreciated that advice.  It is incredibly important for a writer to have honest feedback about their work.  If the reader doesn't get what I'm trying to say, then I've failed.  Whenever I have beta readers read my stuff, I always ask them:  What is your favorite part and why?  What was your least favorite part and why?

But beta readers and a writers group are two totally different things.  Readers may not be writers.  They may not understand the mechanics of the work or the process that goes into creating it.  They may know what they like or don't like, what's working or not working, but they might necessarily know why.  It's really important to have input from both groups to whip your work into the best shape possible.

At the end of the reading, she read a from a piece that hasn't yet been published.  Apparently, it's been on submission, and one place had it for 10 weeks, but then rejected it.  She commented to the audience that rejection still happened to her.  That was both refreshing and depressing.  Ursula Le Guin has been writing for a long time and has made huge impacts in her genre, who wouldn't want her work?

In the end, I came out of the reading feeling inspired and proud to be part of such a wonderful community of writers.  It was awesome to listen to both women talk about their work and writing process and to see that it's important not to take yourself so seriously.  In the end, writing should be fun, and if it's not, it's not worth doing.

A Literary Community

One of the other things I learned at the AWP marketing panels was how important it is to have a literary community; other writers you can talk to about writing--frustrations, accomplishments, etc.  Over the years, it has become apparent just how important this is.

After getting my undergrad, I stopped writing fiction for several years.  I had multiple setbacks, including college professors who totally shook my confidence and made me believe I couldn't write.  I decided I was going to be an editor.  That way, I could still be involved with writing in some fashion.  My friend Tamara (you're going to hear about her a lot; she's been a huge influence on my career) actually tempted me back to the dark side and got me writing again.  She was so good, she even got me to submit my work.

I'll admit it:  when I came back to writing, I was very jealous.  I wanted things to be easy; for agents to grab my novels and make me a millionaire.  I would see others getting fat contracts, and that made me incredibly angry.  The worst were those who got contracts simply because of their names.  I grew bitter.  I believed that every other writer out there was my competition and that I had to do whatever it took to be better than them.

Then, one day, I decided to stop being so angry.  It became clear that writers weren't my enemy, they were my friends, my support group.  I took a job as a freelance editor.  I started hosting authors on my blog.  I connected with them through social media.  I discovered that the vast majority of them went through the same struggles I did, and decided it was dumb to hate them.  I needed to help them.  In return, they did the same for me.

One of my favorite things is to have authors that are featured on my blog email me.  Recently, I had an extensive conversation with one where we swapped marketing tips and the frustrations of promotion.  It was encouraging and resourceful.  But more importantly, it is a connection with someone who shares the same passion I share.

I no longer begrudge writers who get big fancy contracts.  I still want to be one of them one day, and if it happens, hooray.  At least I'll never regret not trying or putting myself out there, and I know I'll always have friends to encourage me along the way.

Stanley Heckley’s world was torn apart the night his wife and infant daughter were murdered by his wife’s ex-lover, James Gandy. Left with no family to call his own, Stanley is consumed with rage and thirsts to exact revenge in the only way he thinks is fair – to kill Gandy’s entire bloodline.

Unfortunately for Stanley, his timid personality and good conscience makes killing a difficult task to accomplish.

Tormented by his inability to avenge his family, Stanley seeks the help of a distant acquaintance known simply as the vampire, Geoff. Touched by Stanley’s plight, Geoff takes it upon himself to give Stanley a thirst for blood and the talent to kill. As a newly turned vampire, Stanley joins Geoff on a complex mission of murder and vengeance as they hunt each member of the Gandy family one by one, wiping the entire bloodline from existence.

Or so they thought.

Over a century later, Stanley learns that a dire mistake has left one Gandy alive. Once again faced with the monsters of his past, Stanley finds himself returning to his hometown of Meyers to hunt the remaining descendant, Amanda. From the get-go, Stanley’s mission is plagued with many obstacles including a new henchman for Geoff, a ghost of a young, sadistic girl, and the fact that Amanda looks remarkably like his late wife. For this member of the undead, hunting the final Gandy may just be the death of him.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
My husband actually gave me the idea. We were in the middle of watching True Blood, when he turned and asked me, “Why hasn’t anyone done a story where a vampire kills an entire bloodline?” Well, I decided to be that person and thus, Parricide was born!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It took me a few months to write. I wanted the story to be believable, dark and jarring. It was a bit of an emotional experience putting myself in the mindset of the characters, and because of that I took my time penning it.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I often have different stories swimming around in my head. It is very satisfying to put those thoughts onto paper and to see your ideas in physical form.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Me, haha. I’m my own worst critic and often I’m a bit too hard on myself. Sometimes I wish I could just shut up that part of my brain that is always telling me that my story isn’t good enough.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Probably anyone on Teen Wolf! I love that show and I’d love to get the script to see what happens before the episode even comes out!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
My husband and I are a bit behind on grocery shopping, so it could be a number of things.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
SILVER (the final installment of the Life Force Trilogy) will be released by the end of March. I am also finishing up a werewolf novel (Urban Fantasy) and a New Adult novel.

Product Warnings
This book contains some serious foreplay in the great outdoors; stand-up sex with a hot, stand-up guy; and a wounded Army Ranger who’s determined to leave no heart behind—especially the one belonging to the girl of his dreams.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Basically, MORNING LIGHT came to life because my characters were taking up entirely too much room in my head. I was actively working on another project and had to set it aside so Noah and Tenn could come to life.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Forever. Or it felt like it at the very least. In reality it took eight months to write, another month after I sent it to my freelance editor, then another month after that before I submitted to a publisher. So, like I said, forever.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Characters! I love my characters. Sometimes they drive me crazy and I fantasize about cutting them from the book, but I still love them. Every story I write always begins with the characters, never with the plot. I let them tell me what's happening, but I get to build them.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My day job. Even though I actually like my day job and the people I work with, I'd really like to write full-time. And never leave my pajamas. The day job keeps me in coffee so I can't complain.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Alex Minsky. He might not be a household name (even though he should be), but he's a former Marine that lost a leg and is now a model. I'd rather not actually be him, but I'd love to tag along for a day and just pepper him with questions. After I finish The Day of Pleasure series I've got Alex pegged for my muse for another character's book. Also, you should Google him, because he's not only a true hero, but the man is dead sexy.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have no idea what's in the fridge or how old it is! Thankfully my husband takes care of all the cooking. Basically I'm not allowed in the kitchen unless it's to make coffee. Which I'm excellent at, by the way.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Currently I'm in the process of final edits for the second book in The Day of Pleasure series, TWO IN THE AFTERNOON. It'll be available this summer, but I'm not at liberty to announce the release date just yet! You can find me on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/CoraCade or you can check out my website at: www.coracade.com for updates.

Once at Haven House, Evaine is introduced to The Family. Like them, she has become A Deader, a reanimated Undead.

Can everyone band together to keep Evaine off the cutting table of those she escaped from? Or will second death tear her away from everyone, for good?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
The fact that I'd never heard of a zombie romance before and I thought the idea was disgusting. So I had to figure out a way to make it not disgusting. It was a fun challenge.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
30 days. 150,000 words. Then 4 years of editing!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Seeing where the story goes. I love seeing where the story goes and how my characters shape up because I never know until the end of the first draft.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing. Ugh…Brain frying!! Seriously! It takes ten times as long to edit as it does to write. I don't like editing because it makes me no longer love my book. But when it's all over and I get to see my book again and say, Wow! I did that! That makes it all worth it.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Uhm…Tom Hiddleston's girl friend. I think it's pretty obvious why J

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I just cleaned mine yesterday, so if you had asked me yesterday I would have been embarrassed, but today it's salad dressing. I am notorious for wanting to try new dressings and then hating them. I should stop trying. I don't like any store bought dressings besides Trader Joe's brand. I think I have one bottle in there that's a year old. It's a Caesar dressing.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have the first book in my Farielle Series coming out in April. Red the Were Hunter is the first in my Fairytale Retelling/Fantasy Romance Series. The second in the series, Snow the Vampire Slayer, will be out mid summer.

My novel, The Society, a Dystopian Paranormal Romance in which the Vampires rule the world, will also be out this year. It follows Coven Lord Danika Checkov and her struggle as the only female Coven Lord in America, to keep control of her company and her coven. While trying to keep her new slave Mason out of her bed. But Mason isn't human, like she thinks, and keeping her teeth out of his neck is easier said than done.

I also am starting a new series of NA Werewolf novellas, Shifter Rising Series, based around Liam, a werewolf who helps relocate shifters in trouble. That series is a lot of fun and super quick reads. Those will start appearing this year as well.

After those, I have a bunch of other series as well as stand alone books that will be coming out in the next several years. I have over 30 ideas still bouncing around in my head!

Marketing Panels and Forming a Plan

I attended several marketing panels while at AWP.  Marketing is such an important part of being a writer, but I don't ever feel like I'm doing it right.  I participate in blog tours and try to do readings at libraries and bookstores, but I'm always open for other ideas on how to get myself and my work out there.

One of the biggest things I learned from all of the panels was that it's not enough for me to promote my book, I have to offer myself.  Readers want to connect with the author.  They want to know there's a human being behind the writing.  One of the suggestions that came from all of the panels was to give something back.  They suggested offering to do workshops or presentations.

That thought got me excited.  What could I possibly have to offer to other people?  What would they be interested in hearing me talk about?  Then it hit me:  research.  For both my fiction and nonfiction I've done research, and for both types of writing, how that research is incorporated varies greatly.  I thought it would be fun to share with others what I've learned about research during my writing career.  Perhaps they could find something useful in my presentation.

Another thing that was suggested was to pool resources and share the stage with another author.  Again, I thought this idea was fabulous and instantly found my friend Tamara to convince her to share the stage with me.  It didn't take much.  We've been friends for a long time, so helping each other out with our writing and promotion is second nature.  Currently, we are working on a proposal about how research is necessary when writing either fiction or nonfiction and ways to incorporate it into your writing.

I'm sure if I thought about it, there are several other workshops/presentations about writing that could be given.  The only thing I really need to do them is time.  With a full-time job and a family, plus trying to find time to write, I don't have an abundance of it.  But I'll do what I can when I can.

The most important thing I learned from all these panels was that you have to put yourself out there.  It doesn't matter what kind of promotion you do, just as long as you do something.  Personally, I really enjoy talking to people about writing, so I have no qualms about presenting in front of a group.  I hope with the new ideas Tamara and I are putting together we'll get to do it often.

An Atmosphere of Support

I've been to another  literary conference before, but it wasn't nearly as big as AWP.  It was fun, but I felt like if you weren't already part of the club, you weren't going to be part of the club.  I still mingled and learned a lot, but I never really felt like I belonged.  I never got that sense at AWP.

There are literally thousands of writers that go to this conference.  It's easy to get lost in the crowd, but I never felt like I wasn't part of the crowd.  It was so easy to talk to people.  I was with my friend Tamara, who is really good about talking to everybody and anybody, so we would be engaged in conversations with others as we walked the three blocks to the convention center.

Once there, you could turn in any direction to talk to someone.  I handed out several business cards and got many back.  I didn't feel like I was in competition with anyone but was there for a common goal:  to make ourselves better.

It was inspiring to be at this conference.  The panels were incredibly awesome, the people were super nice, and the whole experience was just fantastic.  It felt good to be around like-minded people and to talk about writing.  I almost didn't go to the conference.  There was a sense of hesitation because of the cost and the distance, but with my friend there and my spouse basically shoving me out the door, I went.  And I'm so glad I did.  It was worth every moment.
