Never alone. Never apart.

They are the Awakened, a unique breed of people in a remote corner of the world. Faith is one of these gifted carriers of the Seraphim; and in return of her unconditional love, her Seraphim grants her powers of incredible potential.

But not all carriers embrace their blessing.

Jack loathes being an Awakened. He never asked for it, his Seraphim keeping him alive even in spite of his desire to die. Not even a great war could rid him of this curse.

Now a magician of incredible ability and a walking dead man must find a way to work together to save the Seraphim. Someone covets the power of the Awakened, and will not stop until that power belongs to him.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This story is all about my family, a love song if you will. My great-aunt who took over the role of my grandmother when she passed away, was a strong yet wonderfully kind woman. She led a life that just seemed to make everyone around hers better. All the stories of my grandmothers’ and Aunt Ruth ended up in Weather Child in some way. I only wish they were around to read this book.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Weather Child took about a year to write, but it has been through many iterations. It was initially podcast, and then got edited many times. Finally, after being told by New York publishing that no American reader was interested in reading a book set in New Zealand, I decided I was going to indie publish the book, and prove them wrong. It was what my relatives would have done.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love living inside other people’s heads and making up worlds where only my imagination is the limit.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
When I get too many ideas, and I have to shove some back since I only have so much time to do things.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d love to be Queen Elizabeth I…just for a day, and that day would have to be when she was just on the throne, having fun and dancing.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Oh gosh, I have some parmesan cheese in there from October. I am waiting for it to achieve sentience.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have a steampunk YA series that I am working on, a spinoff of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. Then I am working on an epic fantasy, but I also have more ideas for the Awakened series.

When I wake up in a dark, unfamiliar room, I have no idea what's waiting for me in the shadows. My imagination conjures up demons of the worst kind.

Reality is much worse:

A collar with no leash. A prison with no walls. And a life stripped of meaning.

I am presented with a vile contract and asked to sign. It outlines the terms of my servitude. The only information I have about my captor are the two small letters inked at the bottom:

J.S.

Armed with only my memories, I must do everything I can to avoid becoming ensnared in his twisted mind games. But in the end, it all comes down to one choice:

Resist and die.

Or submit, and sign my life away

Book Trailer

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
It started with a dream, nope just kidding the story was inspired by my love of vampires and True Blood. Since I was a kid I wondered if vampires were real, what they would be like. What if they were actually aliens from another planet? And thus the At Death It Begins seers was born.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first book took three years, the second took about a year and half so I'm hoping the third book will only take a year.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is the escape. Getting lost in another world is exciting.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The worst thing about writing is laundry. For some reason it never gets done when I'm in writer mode … you know come to think of it neither does the dusting, vacuuming or any cleaning for that matter. And apparently, (according to the hubs at least) you really shouldn't go more than three days without a shower either.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would love to be David Gandy. If I got to be him I'd just stand in front of mirror staring at myself all day. Seriously, how does that man get anything done? He reminds me of a Zoolander quote "Is there anything more important in life than being really, really, good looking?" (PS totally love that movie, if you haven't watched it you should)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I couldn't tell you because the mold covering it makes it indiscernible. (Did I mention writer mode?)

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More love stories with a paranormal twist.

Recent Happenings

A while ago, before I had a contract with Booktrope, I entered The Appeal of Evil into The Dante Rossetti Awards 2013 for YA.  I didn't win, but I was a finalist.  That was incredibly exciting to me.  My heartfelt congratulations go out to all of those who did win.  Hooray!  I was honored to be in the presence of such great writers.

In addition, in the next three days, my friend Tamara and I will be heading to the AWP conference in Seattle.  I am so very excited for this.  I've been to conferences before, but small ones, so going to this prestigious and incredibly large one is going to be a new experience.  I get to meet my amazing book manager Wendy in person, and I will be at the Booktrope table to sell some books and meet the other authors.  It's going to be awesome!

When I get home, I have an appointment with my local Big Brothers Big Sisters to read my children's books to an after school program.  That should be a lot of fun.  I'm looking forward to that.

Then, in April, I will be giving my presentation about Women and Horror at the Rock Springs Library.  This is my hometown, so I'm excited to go back and speak to them.  I also get to hang out with my parents, so that's a bonus.

There may be some other opportunities that come up this year, but I think I'm starting out strong.  I'm excited to see where 2014 takes me.  So far, it's promising to be a great year.

In addition to these appearances, I am continuing to write.  I'm finishing up my nonfiction zombie book, as well as working on the sequel to The Appeal of Evil, which is called Dealing with the Devil.  Stay tuned for more exciting happenings!

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
My daughter’s grotesquely long nails.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
From its first muse to its submission, it took six months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The surprises that come along with it. Often, I have the same feeling when I have to break from writing as I do when I get stopped in the middle of a book —I need to resume ASAP to discover what happens. The suspense kills me.

On that note, I particularly enjoy creating characters, throwing them into complex situations, and seeing how they surprise me.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writing up synopses is a chore for me, and all the technical stuff, like searching for spacing or minor formatting errors, is a real bore.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would hate to be famous, even for a day, but if I had to succumb to this torture, I’d pick HRH Prince George’s place. Too young to realize what all the fuss is about, but old enough to enjoy fun toys (I hope), and a great grandmother with class to boot!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Mustard, that most be approaching its birthday. There’s not much old food in my fridge — I have two teen boys. Good thing they don’t like the yellow condiment, at least I have something to name.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have a YA fantasy being released soon, but that’s under a different pen name. It’s the first in a series and I will be wrapped up in this project for awhile. But eventually I would like to write another MG fantasy featuring the characters from Launching Sisters to WitchCamp, just for fun. I’ve enjoyed my time with them, and would hate to say a final goodbye.

Thank you for having me,

LRS

“Team Packer” is a covert Catholic strike team against supernatural evil with a secret weapon in its arsenal: 16-year-old Delilah Vincentio—the world’s only Christian succubus. Trained by demons to despise humanity and lead them into sin, her unprecedented capacity for mercy caused her to renounce her place in Hell—and gain an angelic referral to Team Packer.

Delilah is assigned to infiltrate the Order of the Lightbringer, a Satanic cult that plans to make Pittsburgh a test site for the Apocalypse. After Delilah’s identity is almost discovered, Team Packer sends her to high school to hide out until things cool down.

But while Delilah may be reformed from her beguiling ways, she’s still very much a demon—and she hasn’t learned how to play well with others. In fact, trying to fit in and keep a low profile at high school may prove to be a tougher battle than bringing down the Order of the Lightbringer.

“The demons in Hell are secretly defecting and pushing their infernal realm towards Heaven in a handcart! This story kept me riveted from start to finish—a ride and a half !”—Adele Abbot, author, Postponing Armageddon and Of Machines & Magics

“His name is almost like mine, he’s no relation, and he writes a kind of YA Fantasy all his own. Fast-moving, knowledgeable, historical, spiritual, heroic, Barton Paul Levenson’s Celibate Succubus is good reading at any age.” —Paul Levinson, author, The Plot to Save Socrates and Unburning Alexandria

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Speculation about what it would be like if a demon could be saved. Also, the manga Rosario + Vampire, which has a succubus as a major character (though she's nothing like my protagonist).

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Less than a year.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The feeling of triumph on finishing.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Revising. But it has to be done. "Anyone can write. A writer can rewrite."

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
President Obama. I'd issue some executive orders to get things done I'd like to see done.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Probably some of the dried-out vegetables in the bottom drawer. I think some may date back to the Cambrian period.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I'm working on an epic high fantasy called The Key to the World. I'm aiming at 2,000 pages, which is insane, but it might be publishable if broken up into a series.

Portal Soundtrack by Imogen Rose

About a year ago, when Imogen Rose, author of the cult bestselling series, the Portal Chronicles, was surfing YouTube she stumbled upon a song, “If We Fall” by SHE SAID SAVE ME, and instantly fell in love with both the lyrics and the male vocal. She put the song on her writing playlist and looked up the Toronto-based band on Facebook… and liked their page. A while later, Imogen received a PM from Joe Vercillo, saying that if her books were ever adapted for film or TV she should feel free to use his music. She had no idea who he was, but looked him up. Imagine her fan girl sqee moment when she discovered that he was the lead vocalist for SHE SAID SAVE ME! Imogen and Joe have been Facebook friends ever since.

The Portal Chronicles starts off with a serendipitous meeting in a London pub, which propels the lives of the characters into a time warp of what-ifs. During the prologue, which is the key to the story, Rupert is humming a song in that London pub where Olivia and he seal their fate. Imogen Rose always wondered what he was singing. Until late one night, when she closed her eyes and “heard” it. Imogen wrote the lyrics and SHE SAID SAVE ME put it to music. What better day than Valentine’s Day to release this song that defines the romance that is PORTAL?

Catching Heat by Alison Packard‏

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Alison now lives in Southern Nevada where she’s still getting used to the blistering summers and slot machines in every grocery store.

Life has taught Angie DeMarco that all baseball players are womanizers, and her incredible one-night stand with sexy San Francisco Blaze back-up catcher J.T. Sawyer seemed to prove it. Determined not to give in to their sizzling chemistry a second time, she’s kept her distance ever since, focusing on her accounting job with the team. But now she’s laid off…and pregnant.

J.T. was hurt by Angie’s rejection, but with one more year with the Blaze, he has no time for love. He needs to spend the off season training hard so he can negotiate a better contract with a new team at the end of the year. But when Angie shows up on his doorstep, he‘s overwhelmed by wanting to not just do right by her but pursue a relationship with her. Hoping for a second chance, he proposes.

Angie agrees to marry J.T. on one condition: the marriage will be purely a business arrangement. But as Angie spends time with him and his family, and J.T. neglects his training to spend time with her, what begins as a union in name only slowly grows into something more—something that looks a whole lot like love and friendship.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve always been a huge fan of marriage of convenience stories and although I knew it would be a challenge to write one in a contemporary setting, I felt that I had a good set-up for it with Angie and J.T., so I gave it a shot.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Although it seemed like forever because Catching Heat was much more difficult to write than the first two books in the series, the first draft was completed in about six to seven months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The one thing that makes writing a true joy is being able to take a seedling of an idea and grow a story from it. It’s often scary and a little intimidating, but it’s the greatest feeling in the world when it’s all said and done and I’m hear from readers who have enjoyed the story.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Looking at the blank page and wondering what the heck to write next. It seems like it happens with every single chapter.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Tina Fey because I think she’s brilliantly funny and I’d like to know what that feels like for a day.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Wow…so many possibilities. lol. If I had to narrow it down, I’d say it’s a toss-up between a squeeze bottle of Hershey’s chocolate syrup, which has been in there for almost two years, and a jar of dill pickle relish that has been there just about as long.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More in my Feeling the Heat series for sure. I’m currently working on a novella featuring J.T.’s brother, Jake, and a full-length novel featuring two characters other characters from my second novel, The Winning Season.

The Unholy is his first novel.

A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Amazon

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Over thirty years of treating patients who have suffered from the dark side of religion inspired The Unholy. The travails and dramatic life stories ushered my imagination into a phantasmagoric realm in which a young medicine woman engages in a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Dreams, such as ones experienced in therapy, and synchronous events, natural magical happenings, inform the healing process just as they guided Claire in her battle against evil!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The book was in process for ten years. After years of rejection from other publishing houses, Jim Smith of Sunstone Press in Santa Fe, New Mexico saw it and claimed it. The actual writing took two to three years with edits. The Unholy was its own journey of discovery and natural magical happenings!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Listening to the unconscious mind unfold creatively in the form of story, dramatic narrative is fascinating. The characters come alive, speak to you, tell you what to write, what they suffer, their challenges, and their outcome. The Unholy filtered through my waking life, dreams, and ongoing musings during the three years in which it was written. I totally enjoy the life of the story felt within the context of my daily life and inspiration and then taken to paper.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Waiting to hit the page running is my least favorite thing about writing. The anticipation of pouring words out onto paper can be painful. You want to get to it and do it. The pain is in the waiting. The Unholy would allow me to write only so much at a time, pause, let days pass, wait, write more….painful in the waiting…a pregnancy of sorts.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
No fame for me. The mystics of old would flee the thing. They felt it compromised them. I believe that. Archbishop William Anarch in The Unholy craved the power and prestige of fame, among other things. When you read the story, you’ll see where it got him.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Old memories are the oldest thing in my fridge. They’ve been there metaphorically for a good, long time. Funny thing, when I open up the fridge, things from the past pop to mind. So often, the stored memories of pleasant encounters and painful occurrences usher forward. In The Unholy, a young woman is haunted by the past, things stored in her mental fridge, and needs to come to terms with them, to face the past, deal with it, or forever be haunted.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The Dark Goddess is rolling out. It’s another psychological thriller set in the mythopoeic realm of Aztlan, same region as The Unholy. It’s a novel asking is bad love better than no love? This and other psychospiritual thrillers will be coming on down the pike over the next few years.

Now Gage has a wish of his own—to be a real man and a have a real life even though he knows it’s an impossible dream. This time he plans to take his bottle and break it just to see what will happen.

Paramedic Sasha Watts has seen the damage falling in love does to people and she has no intention of being another of Cupid’s victims. She accidentally frees Gage without knowing what he is. After one kiss he walks away and she never expects to see him again, but the goddess Inanna has other ideas.

As punishment for breaking his bottle she erases Gage’s memory of everything but Sasha. Only Sasha can give him the life he longs for and only Gage can be the man she’s always dreamed of, but first she’ll have to open her heart and he’ll have to finish the job Inanna gave him. If he fails, he’ll cease to exist.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Temptation in a Bottle is the second In a Bottle story. While the first one was about a woman getting her dream boyfriend and the genie falling in love, Temptation in a Bottle is a little darker. The genie is prepared to risk death by breaking his bottle to be free. It’s always an interesting idea to see how far characters can be pushed and see what they are willing to give up.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft didn’t take me long, but after that it sat around for a couple of years as I was too busy working on other things to clean it up and give it the attention it needed.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love making up new worlds and I love the happily ever afters. Creating something that readers can believe in is a lot of fun. I think my love of world building comes from growing up reading fantasy novels.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
It depends on the day. Sometimes the words don’t flow, or the edits seem impossible. But it’s always different the next day so I just keep going. Overall it’s a great job J

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d want to be someone really rich, then I’d donate a pile of money to charity. Or I could be Deborra-Lee Furness so I could kiss Hugh Jackman. I imagine that would also be fun ;)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I think the oldest thing would be my hubby’s left over tinned beetroot (gag). It’s in a tub at the back. I refuse to touch it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have two sci-fi romances coming out (one in a few days!) Lunar Reunion and Lunar Dancer and two more fairy books this year, The Changeling Soldier and To Love a King. There is more exciting news to come but I can’t say yet (I know, I’m evil).

Perfect Opposite by Zoya Tessi‏

A teenager in an adult’s body. A rebel in the guise of an ordinary citizen. A lady with very unladylike language. A dreamer with a rational mind. A woman born into the wrong era, she still believes that chivalry’s a feat to define the perfect man.

Zoya spent years doing volunteering work all across Europe, from cleaning school basements in Northern Russia to excavating Stone Age artifacts in Euskadi (the Basque country) and renovating castles from the middle ages in Southern France. She always dreamed of working with ‘Doctors without borders’ somewhere out in Africa, but ended up doing an ‘ordinary job’.

Her greatest passion is devouring each and every book that comes within her reach.

Their wishes were simple and modest. Fate had other things in store though, and she can be a real bitch sometimes.

- All he wanted was to get the job done and somehow to endure those long months playing nanny to a spoiled little rich girl. Without strangling her with his bare hands in the process. Well, it is going to be much easier said than done.

- All she wanted was to escape the past and live like any other nineteen-year-old girl. Her plan definitely didn’t include the arrogant, tattooed savage, with his awful mohawk hair and lack of social graces, whose only mission was to stick real close and mess up her life.

But, people aren't always what they seem to be, are they?

Book Trailer

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
To be honest, I have no idea where that inspiration came from. I’d had the idea for the story rolling around in my head for some time, but at the start I didn’t plan to write it in book form. In fact, when I started writing, I was doing it for myself and wasn’t planning to publish it. Writing the story was mainly for my personal satisfaction. And when I started – I just couldn’t stop.

Before I started to put words on paper, I had more than half of their story in my head. A bunch of situations and dialogues were already there in my mind, sitting and waiting to be written down. The other part, the one I didn’t have in my head, came along while writing up the story, mostly the aspects connected to Alex’s and Sasha’s thoughts and their dialogue. The only factor I didn’t ‘have’ when I started writing was the ending, which came to me while I was developing the flow of the story.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Well, I’m not quite sure. About one year, I guess.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Not knowing how the story will end. Funny, I know, since I was the one writing it, but I had more than twelve chapters under my belt before the ending came fully formed to my mind. It was really exciting, writing a book without even knowing what would happen in the end.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
There isn’t really ‘least favorite’ thing. I loved it all. But, the hardest part was choosing the title. I suppose a title like ‘Summer’s Day’ or ‘Blue Sweater’ wouldn’t raise much interest, right? I had some ideas, but the real challenge was choosing the best from all of them. It had to be interesting, catchy, and above all it had to make people want to read a book. Also, it had to be short and to give readers some insight into what goes on in the story. At one point, I had a list of thirty titles that met all those requirements. I thought about the title for months, discussed options with my editor, thought of pro and cons for each one on the list, but in the end I took the list and just threw it in a trash can. The thing is, just as the story formed like magic in my mind (I was traveling home from work one day, and poof, there it was), the title just came to me.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A rocks star. Any popular male rock star. I would love to know what’s going on inside their heads.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Well, it is, or better said – was, a bottle of wine I bought in Moscow ten years ago. I was keeping it for some special occasion ( like my wedding, hah). I opened it last week when ‘Perfect opposite’ hit #4 in NA and YA Kindle Free store during 3 day free book promo and got 10.000 downloads in those 3 days. That wine was disgusting, by the way. Now I have only some old carrots in there.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?

Well, I do have some future adventures in store for Sasha and Alex, but I’m not sure that would mean sequel in the sense of picking up the story where we left off. Maybe it’ll be a story from Alex’s point of view. I’m not sure yet, because for now I’m working on another book which will be a bit different to ‘Perfect Opposite’. It’ll be a paranormal YA novel, in which the main story’s set in the present, but flashbacks are going to take us back a few centuries. The story is, once more, about a far from ordinary young couple, unique in their own very special way. I’ll admit to being a little concerned about how readers will accept the main hero in this book, when they learn about his very troubled and, let’s say, bloody past. But, we’ll see. That’s all I can say for now.

How to Be a Man by Tamara Linse‏

Tamara Linse grew up on a ranch in northern Wyoming with her farmer/rancher rock-hound ex-GI father, her artistic musician mother from small-town middle America, and her four sisters and two brothers. She jokes that she was raised in the 1880s because they did things old-style—she learned how to bake bread, break horses, irrigate, change tires, and be alone, skills she’s been thankful for ever since. The ranch was a partnership between her father and her uncle, and in the 80s and 90s the two families had a Hatfields and McCoys-style feud.

She worked her way through the University of Wyoming as a bartender, waitress, and editor. At UW, she was officially in almost every college on campus until she settled on English and after 15 years earned her bachelor’s and master’s in English. While there, she taught writing, including a course called Literature and the Land, where students read Wordsworth and Donner Party diaries during the week and hiked in the mountains on weekends. She also worked as a technical editor for an environmental consulting firm.

She still lives in Laramie, Wyoming, with her husband Steve and their twin son and daughter. She writes fiction around her job as an editor for a foundation. She is also a photographer, and when she can she posts a photo a day for a Project 365. “Never acknowledge the fact that you’re a girl, and take pride when your guy friends say, ‘You’re one of the guys.’ Tell yourself, ‘I am one of the guys,’ even though, in the back of your mind, a little voice says, ‘But you’ve got girl parts.’” – Birdie, in “How to Be a Man”

A girl whose self-worth revolves around masculinity, a bartender who loses her sense of safety, a woman who compares men to plants, and a boy who shoots his cranked-out father.

These are a few of the hard-scrabble characters in Tamara Linse’s debut short story collection, How to Be a Man. Set in contemporary Wyoming—the myth of the West taking its toll—these stories reveal the lives of tough-minded girls and boys, self-reliant women and men, struggling to break out of their lonely lives and the emotional havoc of their families to make a connection, to build a life despite the odds. How to Be a Man falls within the tradition of Maile Meloy, Tom McGuane, and Annie Proulx.

The author Tamara Linse—writer, cogitator, recovering ranch girl—broke her collarbone when she was three, her leg when she was four, a horse when she was twelve, and her heart ever since. Raised on a ranch in northern Wyoming, she earned her master’s in English from the University of Wyoming, where she taught writing. Her work appears in the Georgetown Review, South Dakota Review, and Talking River, among others, and she was a finalist for an Arts & Letters and Glimmer Train contests, as well as the Black Lawrence Press Hudson Prize for a book of short stories. She works as an editor for a foundation and a freelancer. Find her online at tamaralinse.com and tamara-linse.blogspot.com

I am so honored to be visiting Pembroke Sinclair’s blog today! She is one of my oldest and dearest writing friends, and when her name appeared on the list of blogs I was visiting, I was stoked. I hope you all have friends like her in your life ~ they support you when you’re down and then they’re there to celebrate with you when you’re winning. And they also gently call you on your sh*t. The best kind of friends.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Because How to Be a Man is a collection of stories, there were many inspirations that encompass why I write in general, which is to try to make something meaningful and aesthetically pleasing out of the confusing bits of lived experience. Sometimes I’m inspired by a specific incident that happened to me or someone else, and other times I’ll start with nothing more than a line or an idea. I’m also inspired by things I read, and sometimes I’ll think, that’s an amazing story. I want to try to write something like that. The first type of inspiration was “A Dangerous Shine,” which was inspired by an incident that happened when I was getting my undergrad and bartending at the Buckhorn Bar. The second type, “Control Erosion,” started with the conceit of trying to get into the mind and language of an engineer and how he would see the nonprofessional parts of his life. The third, “How to Be a Man,” is inspired by Junot Diaz’s great story “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie).” It’s a second-person story, and I’d always said to myself that I’d never do one of those, but one day that’s the way my muse drug me. Those muses ~ they’re pretty bossy sometimes.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
These stories were written ~ and rewritten and rewritten ~ over 15 years. I would get an idea and write a story over a couple of days. I tend to revise extensively as I go along, and so when I get to the end of a story it’s usually fairly complete, unless I go back and totally rework it. Then out it would go with a batch of short stories to literary magazines. When I’m actively submitting, I tend to send batches of stories out every three to six months so that I always have something out there. And so most of these stories have been published in litmags or been runners up in a contest. (Thank you so much, all you editors doing it just for the love!) I sent this collection in a different iteration out to a couple of contests, and it placed in one (the Black Lawrence Press Hudson Prize), but I never sent it out to a publisher. Word on the street is that short story collections don’t sell, and my agent wasn’t interested. Finally, I decided I would put it out myself, and it’s been an amazing process. I edited through it again and in some cases majorly rewrote and reorganized stories. So you might say each story was written in a couple of days and over fifteen years.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Having written? I’m only half joking ~ eh, Pembroke? Seriously, getting started writing is the hardest part. You procrastinate. You clean your bathroom with a toothbrush. You check the internet. God, you check the internet and check and check and check. But once you apply the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair ~ plumbers don’t get plumbers’ block ~ and start, this magical thing happens. You get swept up and your critic goes away and your writer kid comes out to play and it starts flowing, more often than not. Sure, there are days when the critic is firmly planted on your shoulder, but luckily for me once I get going I can usually send her to her room. My favorite part is when I’m into a project and the real world goes away and the world I’m creating becomes more real than the real world. It’s like the real world goes black and white and recedes and the world I’m creating goes Technicolor. It’s amazing. It’s like your best reading experience only better. Just saying this makes me want to drop this writing and go write a novel.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Getting started. Isn’t it ironic when the thing you want to do the most is also the thing you sometimes dread the most? But in the broad scope of things, this is a small part, and there’s so much to love about writing. The positives far outweigh the negatives.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
You know what? I’ve never thought about this before. Not really. I tend to be fairly pragmatic, and if I’m daydreaming it’s about something I can actually do. So instead of dreaming about being a rock star, I think obsessively about how I’m going to construct my new website or what steps I need to get my chores done so that I can get to my writing. I’m a huge fangirl about people who have smart things to say or who create amazing art. And so if I’m admiring anyone ~ if I wanted to be anyone ~ it’d be someone like Virginia Woolf or the street artist Banksy or Adele with her amazing voice or a bunch of people who’ve given TED talks. But that doesn’t answer your question. Hmmm. Okay, if I was going to choose I’d say Hemingway in his villa Finca Vigia in Cuba, hanging out with friends, eating good food, drinking, and talking writing.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Confession: I don’t pay attention to expiration dates. On the plus side, I regularly purge things out of the fridge and out of closets because I like to keep things organized. You may want to take that into consideration next time you come over for a book club.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Great question! I have a novel coming out in July and another coming out next January. The one in July is called Deep Down Things. Set in contemporary Colorado, it’s about a young woman who falls in love with an idealistic young writer. They get pregnant, and he blames her, but because he’s idealistic he “does the right thing” and marries her. Then they have a darling baby boy with a severe birth defect, and she tries to save her child and her marriage. A point of interest: this book is told from four points of view, so you get not only her and his POV but also her brother’s and sister’s POVs, and they all have their own arcs. The book coming out in January is historical fiction called Earth’s Imagined Corners, the first book in a trilogy. Set in 1885 Iowa and Kansas City, it’s about a young woman whose father tries to force her to marry his grasping younger partner, and so she elopes with a kind man she just met who has a troubled past.

Thank you so much, Pembroke! Write on!

Can a traumatized veteran-turned-mercenary who is tormented by voices in his head be saved by the love of a wayward single mother with demons of her own? Afflicted by PTSD from serving in Afghanistan, and tormented by a childhood trauma, transient veteran Matthieu Rousseau struggles with the choices he's made in his life. Estranged from his family, Matthieu drifts from one mercenary job to the next, until one thing stops him. Fate.

In hiding from her abusive ex-husband, musician Fate Callahan lives in New Orleans with her seven-year-old daughter. Fate and Matthieu find themselves on the run together, fleeing from the hitmen and an unseen evil worse than anything else they’ll face. While just trying to stay alive, they become entangled in the battle between the Vigilati and the Lochrim; an archaic sect of witches and the evil creatures they are bred to fight. Unbeknownst to Fate and Matthieu, they are more deeply connected to the Vigilati than either of them could ever imagine.

*The mixed media novelette series contains real magick and spells.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
What inspired me to write Coven of the Courtesan was the need for real witches and magick in books. Most things show witches as dark and evil, which is not true. My books are my way to write something sexy, plus show off real magick and spells. I channel all of the spells so they can be used in daily life.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It all depends. If I am on a good writing groove where the words are flowing it is within a few hours that I can finish something. If my mind is having a bout of “creative ADD” I get distracted for a bit, normally for a day or two then I bring myself back to writing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is bringing characters to life and people identifying with them. It is s thrill when people come up to me to talk about my characters. Makes all the long hours on the laptop totally worth it.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My least favorite thing would be wanting to have story completed even though I am no where near the end of completion. It is like having a finished story in my head but it’s not done on paper.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Pink, because she is the bomb. She speaks her mind and is wicked talented. I also would love to hang from the ceiling like that and sing my heart out. She also not a bad actress.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The oldest thing in my fridge is some chocolate that I found left over from Christmas time. Normally chocolate doesn’t stand a chance in my fridge, this piece got lucky and survived.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Readers can expect more from The Courtesan Chronicles and a new series about rich and famous witches on the Upper East Side plus a sexy self help book about blowjobs. I will also keep creating magickal perfume potions products inspired by my characters.

Complete Surrender by Ju Ephraime

Ju Ephraime began writing professionally at the age of 19, but her love of romantic literature developed when she was a teenager, where she often found herself dallying with her own tales of love and romance.

Two decades later, Ju decided to write novels for women who enjoy a quick spicy-themed read that includes pure pleasure and escape from the real world. With nine romantic novels to her credit, Ju admits her books are part fact, part imagination – but only she knows what’s what. After writing Temptation to Sin, her fans didn’t want to let go of Jayden’s character, so she wrote a sequel to his story – and Against All Odds was effortlessly created in Ju’s mind. Without spoiling the tale for her fans, she firmly believes her readers will enjoy the twists and turns that Jayden and his new love Genna deal with to achieve insatiable undying love. Ju lives in Connecticut with her husband, who blushingly reads every loving tale that she publishes.

She has now released her third in her LaCasse series, Complete Surrender. Set in the beautiful French Caribbean of Martinique, the story of Raymond Lacasse and Gabrielle Descotte sizzles with a level of heat that only the French is reportedly able to achieve. Check it out for yourself, and then you decide.

She loved her brother dearly and would do anything for him, but when she met his intended target, Raymond LaCasse, she swiftly had a change of heart. This book is the third installment a series and there was no getting away from writing it. I wrote the series after an experience I had while visiting the French Caribbean island of Martinique.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I wrote this book in less than 30 days as part of my NaNo challenge in November.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?

Having to do the heavy marketing and soliciting reviews.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’ve never allowed myself to aspire to this.
