Portents by Shanyn Hosier‏

Born and raised in small-town, rural Indiana, I now live in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona with an intimidatingly smart and devastatingly handsome husband and two hyperactively cute and talented sons who will one day be Earth's Overlords (never underestimate the power of Legos). I enjoy cooking, traveling, gardening, sewing, quilting, and embroidery but only when I'm in the right mood and seldom concurrently (I'm kind of streaky when it comes to hobbies). I adore reading and writing in the same way that I love breathing and eating, gaining a similar nourishment from each.

When all signs point to trouble, can Amanda steer clear of disaster?

Amanda Ryder's determined never to fail her coven again. Next time, she won't hesitate to pull the trigger to defend her friends. If only they'd trust her enough to let her set foot outside the Academy…

Frustrated and itching to prove herself, Amanda snags her first Academy mission: she and Toby Laboyteaux, fellow teen witch who "kinda sorta sees the future," must work together to track down a local swamp monster stirring up trouble in the sticks. But overturned suburban garbage cans and blurry tabloid pictures aren't the only problems—strained relationships with her new colleagues, a growing guilt-complex, and the waxing moon all add to Amanda's stress. Add to that the pressure of being hunted by a psychic psychopath, and Amanda's got plenty on her mind.

Meanwhile, Hamilton Nash swears Marian Dupree and her Academy of bumbling do-gooders have thwarted his plans for the last time. Convinced Amanda's the subject of his mother's recent prophecy and the key to his future success, he redoubles his efforts to obtain the mystery girl. But when Amanda proves too slippery a quarry, Nash sets his sights on the next best thing. When a valuable member of the Academy coven is kidnapped, Amanda and her friends are in a race against time. Is a tragic future destined to come to pass?

Charlie Kale knows life isn't easy. But for the first time, this truck driver might have finally found her little piece of happiness. She's got it all—her big rig, friends, a great mentor, and a man about to join her on the road.

That is, until the good things in Charlie's life all fall apart, and she finds herself at the mercy of a sexy but mysterious gunman who claims to be a member of a secret order dedicated to fighting the supernatural monsters that filter over into our world.

She's given a choice—join up or die, and while the gunman might be insane, Charlie’s hell-bent on not dying.

Too bad it looks like that might not be an option.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was actually living on a semi-truck at the time. We would do a lot of runs at night, and for long stretches of the highway, the only vehicles you’d see were semis. Most of them are marked with the names of different companies, but some of them would have blank trucks and trailers, and I’d just think--I wonder what’s in there? They’re so much inspiration for the brain--truckers are mobile, isolated, discreet, and mostly travel at night--and it helps that they’ve long been called “knights of the road”. A secret order of monster-fighters could totally blend into that culture and not even be noticed.

I knew I wanted to write about a female protagonist, and one that was human, that I could actually relate to--and I really love Charlie for that reason. She’s normal--a little chubby, she’s had her share of man problems, and she doesn’t have her life all figured out yet, even though she’s in her late twenties. It’s a story about finding herself and her spine in the middle of an environment that is just choking with rigid rules and testosterone.

BirthMarked is also a homage to Jeff Malone, a real guy that went out of his way to make me feel welcome as soon as we met at a truckstop in Ontario. Right after I got off the truck and returned to “normal” life, I tried working on a few manuscripts that just weren’t working and just getting really frustrated. I was broke and had just gotten this job waitressing for this boss that was just really rude--and then I found out that my friend Jeff had had a heart attack and died behind the wheel, and I wasn’t going to able to go to his funeral. I just went into the kitchen, and I was trying to fill these peanut butter cups with this ice cream scoop, only I started crying--and they fired me on the spot.

I went home, and the book just stopped swirling around in thinky-space and settled into my fingers, and I knew I was ready. There are parts when I was writing it where I cried so hard--and then after it was done, I had to contact his widow for permission to use his name, and I was just petrified, but she was really touched and gave me her blessing and we cried for a while together. I think that’s why there’s so much feeling in the manuscript--tears and love and all sort of things that just seep out of the page, because they were real while I was writing them.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I keep records of my daily word count for each manuscript. It’s the only way for me to know I’m getting somewhere--especially as I have this habit of getting halfway through a manuscript, walking away, coming back six months later, and finishing it. So I can give you some exact numbers. The initial draft took roughly two months. First round of edits took another month. Second round of edits took three weeks. It was sent out to various publishers, most rejected, but one sent back a request for revisions. Those revisions took another three weeks. It was rejected again, but with a very nice letter. The revised version (admittedly much improved over the original version) was sent to another publisher, and immediately placed for publication (I think I heard back in three days.)

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I spent my whole life as an avid reader. When I was a kid, my mom would just drop me off at the library with some fabric shopping bags, and I’d come back with more books than I could carry. I hit the limit for books checked out at once a few times, and I’d take some out of the bag--always heartbreaking! Each book would last me two days at most. I imagine that was the easiest thing about raising me--library visits were free, easy, unlimited, and I was always happy to go.

The idea that I might be giving someone else even a fraction of that experience is profoundly moving. Even if I take one crappy hour of somebody’s day--say on a plane, a dentist’s office, stuck waiting for a bus that has broken down--and make it better--I mean, that’s enough to make you want to keep doing it forever.

With this most recent book, there was the chance to actually honor someone that has passed away. I’ve never been able to do something like that.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
There are days when it’s really hard--when I just hate it. I’m a profoundly lazy person by nature, and one with a lot of insecurities. Those two qualities can combine to make a snowstorm of doubt and self-loathing that make me just want to quit, but I’ve learned to just write through it. If I keep chipping away, word by word, eventually I’ll tunnel myself through to the surface and write something that I love or figure out something that has been stumping me. If I don’t, it’s time to turn to a new project for a while and let the current one simmer--and a lot of times, it just fixes itself when I’m not watching it.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d be Emily Deschanel, so that I could play Dr. Temperance Brennan on Bones. I imagine that has to be the most fun, ever. (Plus, you know, Booth. Yep.)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Gimme a second here. *rifles around a bit.* Okay, I think the oldest thing is a triple pack of brewer’s yeast. A while back, I got the idea in my head that I was going to make Amish friendship bread after seeing it on the internet. It’s this bread with this dough called a starter than you can “feed” with sugar and other stuff and it makes a bunch more dough that you give to friends, and then they feed it and distribute, etc. etc. When I actually mentioned to a bunch of my friends that I’d be doing this, all of them declined the bread--a lot of them having done it before. Apparently, it grows pretty fast, to the point of where eating it as a single person kind of becomes a burden.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’ve got the rough draft for the sequel to BirthMarked just about finished (I mean, I think, but I pants stuff so who really knows--it feels almost done, though) and will be pounding through on that series until it’s done. Charlie is just such a great character that she’s kind of got a stranglehold on my attention, and I really want to see who she hooks up with in the end. (Yeah, I don’t really know either, although I’ve got my guess.)

I’ve got a fantasy series in the works that I’ve been calling the Bad Moon series about a girl that finds out she’s the Morrigan (Celtic battle goddess) incarnate and she’s got to deal with all of this fallout from that. I plan to publish the self-publish the entire series at once when it is finished (kind of a netflix experiment) so that one may be a while.

My novel Gambler’s Luck is currently over at Liquid Silver Books. It’s a historical western, but with shifters, and it didn't sell too well--I think mostly because the cover and the blurb came out without any mention of shifters, and so people were buying it, thinking it was a western, and then holy crap werewolf--the werewolves are having sex, help help!--and people that like shifter novels basically couldn’t find it. I was just going to give up on the whole series, but I've got this great idea for a novel that won’t leave me a lone--a Native American woman whose “husband” gets stuck after he shifts into this evil spirit form, and she’s got to track him down and shoot him . . . rambles incoherently for another half hour.

Dearhart Clan is a series of fast paced books that dabble in the world of paranormal and remain in the erotic pulse of what can only be classified as a primal fantasy. If it’s a typical romance you’re looking for you won’t find it in this series.

Eri Nelson writes in a darker world where heat and need are the forefront for a slipping existence. There is not time for all the tenderness love deserves but if you’re imprinted to another you are far beyond those mortal requirements.

Our author is driven by swift action packed intrigues that often leave you wanting more. As she writes each new book into the series the number of pages might increase but the action never lets you feel the increasing distance to the final page.

The Call From Within is Eri Nelson’s first look into this series. It is here that we meet Owen our Pack’s clan leader. He has been driven by what is expected of an alpha. Facts that were told through the decades all but look like fiction to him now. So he never dared to believe in fate and only let duty push him forth. Although now his resolves make no sense and it took little to no time at all in showing him through the lust he feels for another.

Kristen Still bares the imprinted mark to our handsome alpha. However he wasn’t the first to notice what she was and it’s that bedding of prior passions that control her new weakness. Yes, Owen is pushed by jealousy to possess what his four footed insight tells him is his.

A former distraction wanted more than heated moments with Kristen. In her he saw a stronger life force for his young and if Brinston Drake must he would take what he needs from her. He just did not foresee another finding her as well.

While the rest of Eri Nelson’s cast of characters find their selves caught up in furthering personal existences. Another by the name of Wash seeks to use their distractions as his gain. A rogue sent to track and update, Wash is tested by his hatred and desire for revenge. He’ll have it but not as quickly as he would like. But soon enough Owen will slip farther into his madness over a bitch in heat. Then Wash perhaps can use the heated vixen to distract both her and the alpha into their future demise.

The DHC, Dearhart Clan Series, is a continuing saga that borders on several genres to create what I like to class as dark primal adult paranormal fantasies. In my opinion, the DHC is very erotic but does not fully go into erotica for there are many more aspects I like to let the reader discover from the characters.

Once again, you will encounter Owen Dearhart and his mate Kristen who for a second time find themselves facing obstacles that not only intervene but take away what Owen now finds worth more than the pack itself.

As per request Thomas Dearhart is sent by Owen to track down what they think is a rogue Werewolf. All the while unbeknownst to him, one of their own is taken from the pack. However with knowledge not known a mission at hand takes Thomas finding himself discovering more than what they assumed was a wolf gone astray. It will be this newly discovered venture that will put heat in his loins and a refusal to fully except what is in front of him.

With what seems like destiny fulfilling before him, Wash withers in revenge’s control and takes it upon himself to go further in the mouth of evil for support. So with vengeance as his goal Wash goes back to Opts where Yvone fully intends to arbitrate his ruthless control over not only the situation but Wash as well.

As a cast of characters emerge fighting not only their inner turmoil but those wishing to take them down it should be of no surprise that a few extra faces are now tossed into this dark and desperate world of the unknowns, where the urges of the beast weigh even heavier on their still looming demise.

This third book is far darker than its predecessors, venturing down a path that will ultimately have readers at the door to another series, INK.

Owen and Kristen wage the war of captivities' control and fight all obstacles to find their ways back to each other. However, neither will ever be the same and brink on the lines of death to see each other once again.

Julia caught in loss will form a bond with an unexpected new life now swaddled around her. While Thomas resolves his needs and wants, to having it all with his mate.

From Forest's winter attire, comes a new face that hides well and kills even better. But she will not hide as her destiny arrives on the back of a wolf named Bry. For she and he were destined to carry the upcoming change of the werewolves world.

As revenge smolders still in the mind of Wash, he will be faced with the battle of his life and more importantly the man who will soon control all the werewolves’ fates.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
It came on a call out from a publisher after I wrote my very first book that was around 40,000 words. Although they were asking for a story of only 15,000 words and eventually rejected it, something still sparked within in me to continue on with this short fast paced action packed books that gained in length with each new book.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Since I was writing two other series as well it rolled out to these past two years and possibly further since I am writing the next book.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The endless possibilities.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
How the books and I may be perceived.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Honestly, I can see myself more than I am today. I am ok with that for riches and fame are not everything. Besides with each reader who has enjoyed my books and the read… I am already rich in knowing that my work was enjoyed.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Since I am far from an role model (she smiles with pride) I can honestly say a malt whiskey. That is being saved for a special day.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Hopefully if life is not to cruel to me (she smirks), the next in the DHC series and a follow up to the Isabella (Izzy) Tulley & Aiden Black Series.

Thank you so much for allowing me this time with you and your readers.

Best Wishes,
Eri Nelson

Broken Dolls by BR Kingsolver‏

I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, a teacher, and somehow found a career working with computers.

I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. I was in Paris and Iceland this summer.

I have a very significant other, two cats and two Basset Hounds. I’m currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor, but still own a home in New Mexico.

Private investigator RB Kendrick makes her living nailing cheating spouses, digging up other dirt to help in a divorce, finding long-lost relatives, and occasionally sniffing out criminal activity and fraud.

When she takes a job to find a missing girl, she has no idea she is headed for the most dangerous case of her career. Usually, her ability to read minds gives her an edge. But when the people she’s hunting are also telepaths, that advantage is limited.

The search takes her into the dark underbelly of telepathic society, where anything, and anyone, is for sale. She discovers that telepathic women and girls are being trafficked as the ultimate sex slaves.

With people trying to kill her, she’s on the run, not knowing who she can trust. Will she find the missing girl, or become a victim herself?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I had the character, but wasn’t sure what to do with her. A friend had been after me to write a mystery. I also wanted to write something about the issue of human trafficking. It just all came together.

Q) How long did it take you to write it?
I started writing it about a year and a half ago, then put it aside to work on the books in my Telepathic Clans series. I picked it up again after Succubus Rising was published and almost completely re-wrote the main character. Once I really started working on it, it took about three or four months to complete it. It’s been in revisions and editing now for about another four months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
That’s easy. Having people tell me they liked the book.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Promoting the book. It takes so much time and effort to let people know a book exists and get them to try it. There are millions of other books they could be reading. Except for a few hundred authors, it’s pretty much up to authors themselves to promote their books.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Someone rich, so I could loot their bank accounts. :)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I assume you don’t mean the cheese that aged for four years before I bought it. Probably some apples from last fall. Apples keep for a long time.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have a short story, a romance about a jaguar shape shifter, in an anthology that’s just been published. It’s called Here Kitty, Kitty and the editor is Mia Darien, who also did the cover for Broken Dolls.

I’m working on the fourth book in the Telepathic Clans series. It will be the last installment, and I’m hoping to have it ready to publish next spring. I’ve also been working on a YA/NA paranormal romance about a Valkyrie who’s attending Oxford University, and it should be out next year also.

Newly divorced Das MacDermott longs for a fresh start. As he packs up and prepares to move out of the city, he spots a young woman being held at gunpoint by three men. Despite being outnumbered and unarmed, Das does his best to intervene. Once liberated, the victim seems oddly ungrateful, but on an apparent whim decides to join Das in his new life in rural Ontario. Aislinn, as she is called, returns the favour; with her encouragement and support, his start-up photography business takes off, and more importantly, Das is saved from loneliness and self-doubt.

Das, however, is never quite able to fully dismiss the contrary aspects of Aislinn’s nature, and is strictly forbidden from asking about Aislinn’s past. All seems too good to be true, and indeed it is. Aislinn’s unusual talents and odd Behaviour, unbeknownst to Das, come from her demigod status. Aislinn is half-Sidhe, daughter of Fionvarra, Ireland’s fairy king, and a human woman. Sidhe wars have so disrupted the mortal world that Aislinn has joined with other immortals in an effort to permanently separate it from Tir N’a Nog, the fairy realm.

Born in ancient Ireland, Aislinn spends millennia as the plaything of the cruel and narcissistic gods. The pain of being neither human nor Sidhe is offset by her relationship to the Fir Bolg, another race of fair folk who take pity on her lonely state; and the refuge she takes in being Das’s lover and protector. As Das comes to accept the possibility that Aislinn belongs to a supernatural world, he discovers that the two worlds are set to collide in a way that may mean the destruction of all humanity.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) Old Irish folktales about fairies. As I was reading, I noticed there were quite a number of stories about fairy women marrying mortal men. There were a lot of variations, but generally the fairy women were tricked into it, and the mortal men paid a high price for their deception. I began to wonder how such a story would play out in the modern world, and it grew from there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) About four years, including a full year of research before I even started writing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) Creating the story. Getting to know the characters, establishing a plot line, fleshing it out, adding layers. It’s like a giant word puzzle that I both create and solve.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) Staring at a blank screen. Getting started can be sheer agony. And I’m not just talking about starting a new project. The same thing happens with each new scene.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) K.D. Lang. When I was a kid, I desperately wanted to be a singer. The only thing that stopped me was a complete and total lack of talent. I’d love to know what it feels like to sing like she does.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) A jar of tahini, circa 2003. For some reason, I decided I was going to start making my own hummus. Then I realized I can buy it ready-made. The jar is still unopened. I wonder if tahini goes bad.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) I’m currently working on a second novel, tentatively titled The Divine Measure. It follows a deaf woman as she tries to unravel an ancient secret about the origins of humanity. My goal is to have it published early in 2015.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I am lucky enough to have had several great (and great-great!) grandparents who wrote down their stories and the stories of their parent’s struggles as they made a life in the West. It is such a huge inspiration to see what they had to overcome that has led to my life now! Also, all the drives my husband and I took while we lived in Arizona really gave me some great ideas with all the scenery that just begs to be filled with rugged cowboys and outlaw hideouts.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Around six months – after I figured out who Effie was going to be.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Honestly, being able to live in a different time or see the world through my character’s eyes is my favorite part. It can be challenging at times, especially when I write I character that comes from a different background than me. Effie was at times difficult because she has always been VERY wealthy – I haven’t made my fortune and bought my own island yet ;)

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The marketing side is not something I enjoy. Talking about myself feels like it must be far less interesting for my readers, especially when I try to fill my books full of adventure! I would far rather learn about other people.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I think Neil Armstrong… It must have been one of the most frightening and awe-inspiring moments ever felt by a human when he stepped out onto the moon for the first time. I wonder what it was like when he realized his footprints would never blow away?

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I hate to admit it but I just checked and it is a carton of Yoplait that expired on Aug 16th. I do try to clean the fridge out once a week on trash day. But I missed this one. Can I blame it on being wrapped up in writing my latest story?

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have my next Western 75% written and am also branching out with a romantic suspense that I hope to have finished soon.

The Curse of Malenfer Manor by Iain McChesney‏

Iain is a writer of gothic mysteries.

He was born and raised in Scotland. He studied History and Geography at the University of Glasgow.

The World Wars left Iain’s family with generations of widows. As a result, Iain has always been interested in the tangible effects of history on family dynamics and in the power of narrative to awaken those long dead. For the characters in The Curse of Malenfer Manor, he drew on childhood reminiscences and verbal family history—though he hastens to add that his family had barely a penny, far less a manor, and any ghosts dwell only in memory.

He lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife and two children.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I had always been taken with old mysteries and gothic literature. They were at once civilized and macabre. I read nearly all of Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allen Poe, and the weird short stories of H.P. Lovecraft. I loved how Bram Stoker could bring vampires to life by writing them into existence. These books did not all contain the supernatural, but they were smart, and there was an element of the bizarre in them all. That was the cauldron into which I dropped my World War I soldier and from which The Curse evolved.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
First time through? Six months. I took a new approach when I wrote The Curse of Malenfer Manor. A lesson I had learned from earlier work was to keep going and sort things out later. It didn’t quite work out like that, but I would term the decision a success. With the revising and editing and re-writing, the whole thing took a good year.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I set up my chapters as goal posts. I give them a starting place and a finishing place – the hero must get to this location by this time and have a discussion about motive with so-and-so along the way. Then I let it roll. Seeing what the character does, how they handle this manipulation, what ends up coming out, never ceases to amaze me. The mind is a wondrous strange land.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
It is not the hours, or the sore backside, or the pay, or distress at re-reading what you thought was good in the clear light of next morning. I think writers, as a breed, are the sort that cherish cold showers – take a Spartan pride in enduring. No, what annoys me the most is a necessary part of historical writing – the experts. I am of a generalist mind. It does not matter to me that a certain car is a mark ‘C’ and not a mark ‘D’, but it clearly matters to some people! Proofreading for minutiae is to be dragged across tacks.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Marilyn Monroe and I’d sneak out of filming Some Like it Hot for a few hours. And if you can’t figure out why, then you are almost as lost as I.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have two boys. Their appetites are like those of the supporting cast of Jurassic Park. I don’t think we have a thing in the fridge that is over 6 hours old.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More of the same? Perhaps with a twist or two? I don’t have a title yet, but there is a book already in the oven of which I can share a bit. It takes place on a remote Scottish island in the 1920’s owned by a reclusive industrialist. A cast of curious characters arrive, invited, and pretty soon start to be murdered. The supernatural element remains – the sulfuric whiff of satanic worship – and there may be a cameo or two from some of the Malenfer Manor cast. One can’t write mysteries and not be influenced by the late great Agatha Christie.

Realm Walker by Kathleen Collins‏

Kathleen Collins has been writing since Kindergarten. And while her ability has drastically improved, her stories are still about monsters and the people who play with them.

The rare instances that she actually finds some spare time, she spends it playing with her two boys. Three if you count her husband.

Even as Juliana pursues the demon, it goes after all she holds dear—including Thomas, who is back to claim her for his own. But if she can't reconcile her past and learn to trust herself again, she will lose him forever.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A Daughtry song believe it or not. I was listening to a song and a whole scene formed in my head and from that scene came a book which ended up being book two.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Including all the various revisions and everything else, two years give or take.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love creating worlds. I love making the rules for those worlds. It’s fun to get to decide what a universe will be like.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writing is hard. Getting the story down is the easy part, at least for me. Polishing that story and making it better is hard. The business stuff behind the writing is harder. I just want to create.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’d be the president for just one day. Though I’m not sure that’s enough time to fix the things that need fixing. And with my luck that would probably be the day someone decided to go nuclear on us.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I just cleaned it a couple of weeks ago so probably my salad dressing. It hasn’t expired yet, but it’s close. I’m the only one that eats it so it takes me forever to use it up.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Death’s Daughter is book 2 of the Realm Walker series and it comes out March 31, 2014. There are five books and one novella total in the series and they’ll all be out at some point in some format. Also I have a fantasy my agent currently has out on submission. And I’m always working on something new so you never know what will pop up.

Windfall of Good News

Last night, my spouse and I were helping the boys carve their pumpkins (and by helping I mean that we did the actual carving, but they had to clean out the guts).  In the middle, he received a call.  The news was exciting and something we'd been waiting to hear for a while (nothing exciting for you guys, just something we are selling).  When he hung up, he couldn't help but smile.  And neither could I.  It was another piece of good news to add to all of the other good news that we've been receiving for the past couple of weeks.

It really has been a great few weeks.  I feel like everything is coming up Pembroke.  My next YA novel is progressing nicely through the publishing process (I still don't have a firm date of when it will be out, but I'll let you know when it comes out), I got my new job, I might have an agent interested in my nonfiction book, I actually had a chance to get some writing done this week, and I scheduled my first presentation for the Wyoming Humanities Forum.  Things have been incredibly exciting.

I'm riding this wave for as long as I can and looking forward to the future, no matter what it might bring.  I hope that things are going well for all of you out there also.  I'll share my good vibes through the computer!

And to end the post, here's the pumpkins we carved for the kids!

Joseph O’Reily is still adjusting to the lifestyle and the dangers that come with being a new vampire. He and Cassandra recently fought to the death with Cassandra’s estranged husband John Snow, and now Joseph has experienced his first ménage a trios, as only a vampire can. As if all of this was not complicated enough, he and Cassandra have been tasked with hunting down and killing a rogue vampire, Donald Rathmore.

Another of John Snow’s creations, Donald is an evil misogynistic killer in his own right. Donald has no interest in avenging his creator’s death, but killing Cassandra is at the top of his list.

While Donald continues his murderous spree, Joseph and Cassandra always seem to be one step behind him. The chase is further complicated as they encounter other vampires and learn more about the mysterious nature of the Vampire Council and the coming war between good and evil.

Joseph is only now beginning to trust Cassandra, and this trust will be shaken when he discovers she has even more secrets than he imagined. Her idea of justice and morality is at complete odds with his own. Despite all his powers and growing skill, Joseph is tested physically as a vampire and emotionally by Cassandra. This time the answers and challenges may be too much for the young vampire to handle.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Hi Pembroke, thanks for being a part of my blog tour. Onto your questions…

“Killer on the Road” is a direct sequel to “The Newfoundland Vampire” so it’s hard to explain one without mentioning the other. For a long time (at least 8 years) I had an idea to write a vampire novel set in Newfoundland with the main character based on myself. I loved the idea of exploring what would happen in my life if I made different choices, met different people and of course, vampires were real. So once book 1 was over I just kept writing. For book 2 I was inspired by the success of book 1 (sold about 2300 copies) and had a moment of inspiration on vacation. I just had this notion that my characters had more so say, more to do. Also I should mention that I’ve been fortunate to have traveled a lot in life and I wanted to write a book to show some of the great places I’ve been to and others I hope to visit someday.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Book 2 the ideas were flowing well. It took me about four and a half months to do the rough draft. Then about another 3 weeks of editing before it was reading for print.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The creating of my own characters, my own world, having things turn out the way I want. There’s so many things in the world I have no control over and this is one small thing that I do. I also should say a tie would be getting positive attention for my writing, I know that makes me sound a little egotistical but it’s a wonderful feeling to be appreciated for something you love.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing! For book 1 there was 3 months of it and it was rough. For book 2 it was much shorter but I hate having to fix grammatical issues, it’s just boring and tedious but necessary I know.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
What a great question! Hmm…my first response would be William Shatner (I assume during that day he wouldn’t die, as he’s no spring chicken). It’s because when I was young he was my hero, I know in real life he’s not the friendliest guy but he’s Captain Kirk! Kirk was so much a part of my childhood and as an adult I appreciated his (I believe) much improved acting ability. If meeting your hero is a thrill, I think being your hero even for one day would be tremendous. Plus I could give all sorts of money to charity and tell the fans how much I appreciated their support.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Another great one! I’ve never been asked this question, let me go check. I found some Honey Dijon mustard that’s been there since 2004! I smelled (and looked at it) and I’m not sure if it’s gone bad or not, now that I know how old it is I don’t think I’ll eat it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’ve already started work on an unnamed Newfoundland Vampire book 3. Also I’ll have a short story called “Robots” appear at the back of Walter Knight’s America’s Galactic Foreign Legion Book 20: Time Machine (by Penumbra Publishing same great bunch who publish my books) hopefully sometime late this year.

Thanks for the interview, great questions! I had a lot of fun answering them.

“When the dead need to speak, she must listen…

Artist and Egyptologist Lily Evans struggles with her newly discovered psychic talents, while trying to get her life back to normal now that her mother is in a mental institution and the man Lily loves is far away in England. But "normal" is the last thing she finds.

When her best friend Katy takes her to a Celtic Faire, Lily meets a druid fortune-teller, who warns her that she can “never escape the Other.” Frightened and angry, Lily ignores his dire warning and stumbles across an eerie old portrait of a beautiful woman, who has something to tell her.

With the help of the enigmatic druid and his gifted friends, Lily embarks on a dangerous journey to unravel the mysteries of the portrait, the tarot card reader, an ancient book and whispers of witchcraft. She must discover the truth behind them all…or risk losing her very soul.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Stories grow from the smallest seeds. I was looking out my window and suddenly I got an image in my head of a jewelry box with a pop-out ballerina inside. I had one when I was small and I loved to watch her “dance.” The whole book came out of that vision. I wrote it because people who liked Soul and Shadow kept asking for a sequel. I wanted them to be happy.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
About a year to write and revise.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Being sucked into another dimension where nothing but the story exists. I experience so many emotions through my characters that it’s like living infinite lives. It’s almost as if I have my own TARDIS!

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I think most writers would agree with me-editing!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Now that is a very hard question. I know for certain that I’d be someone super-rich, so I could give as much away as possible. That would make me happier than anything. I guess I’d be someone super-rich who got to spend the day with Chris Hemsworth and Tom Mison helping me give it away!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I don’t even want to tell you. It’s too embarrassing. There’s an entire ecosystem living in there and I think intelligent life is evolving, so how could I clean it?

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’ve just finished Shell and Shadow, a novella in the Lily Evans series. All the profits from it are going to Zara’s Center, a home in Zimbabwe for AIDS-impacted orphans. I’m about half-way through Storm and Shadow. After that it’ll be time for a change, I’m just not sure what yet!

Naomi's immortality is nullified, making her vulnerable to the ones who consider her their conquest. If she wasn't already walking over the hot coals of misfortune she would be obsessed with the next ambush. The shadow vaccine is hell in a syringe, the antidote turning Naomi’s blood into a lethal elixir, rendering her toxic to all vampires, including Damian.

Archangel Michael reveals a long buried secret of her heritage and cautions Naomi against personally triggering the apocalypse. If Lucifer discovers just how unique she is, death at his hands will become her most appealing escape.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
When I started Night Hawk, I knew it was going to be at least a three book series and after the release of Night Hawk there were some questions that readers consistently asked that needed to be answered in Tigress, so my readers inspired some of the direction this story took.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Three months elapsed time, during which I also worked full time at a day job and participated in a month long blog tour for Night Hawk.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating new and interesting characters and messing with their world to see how they react.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Finding the time. Also, when I run into a wall in a story – what folks call writer’s block – that isn’t fun at all. Working through that can be quite painful.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Elsa Pataky. You probably don’t need to ask why – but here it is...Thor.

Yeah, I got me a serious crush on Chris Hemsworth and think he would be the perfect man to play the main character in my Games series.

If you folks don’t know who Elsa is (Fast Five / Fast & Furious 6), she’s married to the man.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have no clue and honestly, I’m a bit too lazy to look. I’m very comfortable in my comfy chair right now (http://www.jetaylor75.com/id30.html).

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Trinity Rising in the Night Hawk Series (NA Paranormal Romance December 2013)

Knocking on Heaven’s Door in The Death Chronicles Series (YA Fantasy 2014)

Fallen – Prequel to The Games Series (YA/NA Suspense 2014)

Victim – (YA coming of age 2014)

I’m also formulating ideas for a spin off from The Steve Williams series as well.

“Suffering of a Witch” is the seventh book in the Savannah Coven Series. The main characters have been bouncing off of each other since book one, and readers seem very excited that Kylie and Quinn are finally getting their story!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Yikes. Well, I usually allow myself three months for a book, but I’ve had a lot of personal changes and traveling that needed to occur, so I ended up taking all three months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The plotting phase and then the end phase of seeing it become real. I’m never at a loss for new ideas, I just can’t write as quickly as I think of new stories! The learning aspect has actually been fun too. I can never go back to previous books and make changes, but it’s exciting to see how my writing has evolved since my first book “Whisper of a Witch” was released.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The physical issues. That’s not a fun answer, I know, but I’ve been dealing with some musculoskeletal problems from sitting with my head down and my arm up for so many hours each day. Beware the mouse! It can get your shoulder in a crunch! : ) But I’m working on getting my desk and keyboard into better ergonomic shape. The second answer would be, editing.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Florence from Florence and the Machine. I’d love to sing and put on a huge concert just once in my life, and I love their music. Or Evanescence. Those are great “belting out” songs.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Darn. I just cleaned it out last night. But it was some bow-tie pasta with tomatoes, garlic, peas, and other goodies that my husband made. He’s a great cook, and I am so lucky for that!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have two other paranormal series planned. The first is an apocalyptic series with magical elements and will have a lot of action and world-building. The other is another series with witches. Right now, it’s plotted to be four books. I also love adventure books, and I may one day turn that into a series that isn’t romance but has a strong female lead. If I ever get the time!
