Foresight by Erika Szabo

Growing up with a father who was a closet reader, some macho image that allowed him to only read in secret. After I caught him reading my book, The Lady of the Camellias, he shared his love of books with me and introduced me to many great books.

Before I started writing this series, I had played with the idea of writing a fantasy story peppered with historical facts. The history of the Huns always fascinated me—they were my ancestors—although I decided that it was a stupid idea after I started reading about how to write a fiction book. I had no idea how to create a good story line or form characters and make up a plot, and I wasn’t a literary genius. But, the idea didn’t leave me alone, and I kept adding events and dialogues in my head to Ilona’s story.

Not knowing how to do something properly had never prevented me from accepting a good challenge before, so I sat down at the computer and began writing. I've never been good at following rules or formulas; therefore, I discarded the instructions and made up my own rules.

I began writing Ilona's story as a diary, for my own enjoyment, jotting down the ideas that swirled in my head was far better than being haunted by them. For months I kept writing and soon realized that I never had so much fun doing anything in my life before.

Ilona has been in love with her unsuspecting best friend, when a dashing stranger explodes into her life. The sudden magnetic feeling frightens her. Will he break her heart, or will he bring true happiness?

A sinister dark man appears, Ilona connects his presence with the series of mysterious deaths around her. She is an emergency room doctor, born into an ancient tribe which still exists hidden amongst us with its fiercely enforced rules. She doesn’t know much about her heritage besides legends and rituals that she continues out of respect for her parents.

She begins to remember the forgotten instructions concealed as rhymes her mother was teaching her since she was a small child and discovers that she can rearrange the human body to its healthy state. This ability is exciting as well as frightening. She is conflicted between having confidence in her intelligence and inherited abilities while having no confidence as a woman.

Her insecurity created barriers which keep others out, and I also keep her caged in. She has been evacuated from her easy and steady life, and is forced to face the unknown.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve been publishing educational books, but because I always loved reading romantic suspense, I decided to write one. The history of the Huns always fascinated me - they were my ancestors - although I decided that it was a stupid idea after I started reading about how to write a fiction book - I am not a literary genius, I have no idea how to create a good story line or form characters and make up a plot - I thought, but the idea didn’t leave me alone. I kept adding events and dialogs in my head to Ilona’s story, and one day I decided to sit down and write it.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The Guarded Secrets series took me about two years to write. I took a break here and there to publish a few educational or fun books too.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing is that I can let my imagination fly. I can create magical world, give my characters abilities and with a sentence, I can make them to be good or evil.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Coming up with a title and write a synopsis for the book are my least favorite parts.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would love to be a famous writer. No, I’m kidding, I’m far from that. Seriously, I would love to discover something that makes people healthier or prevent disease. I would love to have the healing touch, Ilona, the main character in my books has. To wipe out every single disease, so everyone could live happy and healthy.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Oh, my! I just looked, seriously! I found a box of yogurt hidden behind pickle jars that expired in August. I cleaned the fridge many times since, I swear, but somehow I missed it. Good thing it’s sealed, otherwise my house would stink.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I started writing a romantic ghost story. Not the very spooky kind, but something different.

The Accidental Witch by Jessica Penot‏

Jessica Penot is a therapist who lives in Alabama with her 2 corgis, cat, sons, husband and other strange creatures. She is the author of Haunted North Alabama, Haunted Chattanooga, and Circe.

Phaedra Michaels is a small town psychologist who is beginning to lose hope. Two of her patients at the local hospital in Dismal, Alabama have just killed themselves, she’s still reeling from her divorce and what turned out to be a disastrous marriage, and her father has died, leaving her without any notion of who her real mother is.

Just as Phaedra decides to commit herself to a serious drinking problem and an eating disorder, or two, a mysterious spell book arrives in the mail. Feeling desperate, Phaedra uses it to cast spells to save her fading patients. Suddenly, good things start happening. Phaedra’s patients begin to get better and she even starts dating the sexy doctor from the hospital.

Phaedra is so happy she doesn't notice the small things that start to go wrong in Dismal, or the dark creatures slithering out of the shadows near her house. When Phaedra finally realizes her spells have attracted every card-carrying demon from hell, she has no choice but to accept help from a slightly nerdy, 500 year-old warlock with a penchant for wearing super hero T-shirts and a knack for getting under Phaedra’s skin. Now, if only she could get the hang of this witch thing, she might be able to save her town.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was inspired by my work. I work in mental health and it is often hard to find the resources patients need. Sometimes I would wish that there was some kind of magic that could help my patients. In The Accidental Witch, clinical psychologist Phaedra Michaels finds that magic.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It only took me six months to write. I had so much fun writing it, I worked nonstop on it.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
 I love telling stories.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I’m not a huge fan of marketing. I’m not that good at it.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I don’t know. I guess I would be someone really rich so I could donate a lot to charity and give money to the people I love.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
You may not want to know the answer to this. I still have leftovers from Thanksgiving in my fridge.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m working on the second book in The Dark Arts series. The Accidental Witch is the first book. The next book will be called Waking the Witch. I also have a middle grade book called The Monster Hunter’s Manual coming out this spring.

Bitter Snow Series by Lauren Sweet‏

I was born and raised in New Jersey, and books were a big part of my childhood. When I was about three and a half, I became obsessed with a Little Golden Book about a goat that gets a bucket stuck on its head. Since no one would read me the goat book as often as I wanted, I learned to read it myself—and haven’t stopped reading since. It was only inevitable that I turned to writing, so I could create more of the kind of stories that I like to read!

My favorite genres are mystery, sci-fi and paranormal/fantasy. I’ve always been fascinated by myths and fairy tales, and I love incorporating elements of ancient lore into modern stories. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and I currently live near Portland, OR, where I am a freelance writer and editor. My other esoteric skills include astrology, figure skating, and the ability to do a perfect split.

“We are the rulers of Midwinter. In the most powerful cold of the winter, in the deepest dark of the year, we hold sway, and all of your hearth fires cannot stand against us. We are the winds that howl down the chimneys and extinguish your candles. We are the northern lights and the hungry wolves; the bitter crack of ice and the killing frost. The raging blizzard and the deep, soft, final sleep of those lost forever in the snow.”

Bitter Snow is a modern retelling of the fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” in nine novellas. It’s my all-time favorite fairy tale, about a girl’s quest to save her childhood friend from the evil Snow Queen, through her courage, determination, and the strength of her love for him. Each volume is about 80-90 pages (32,000 words). The next three installments are scheduled for release in spring/summer 2014, with the final three to follow later in the year.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
“The Snow Queen” has been my “someday” project for years—I’ve always wanted to write a modern version of it. It was my favorite fairy tale when I was a kid, and over the years I’ve collected various versions of the story, plus Snow Queen cookie tins, bookmarks…I even tried to create a ballet based on the story, when I was a teenager studying dance. Then, earlier this year, I noticed that some authors were experimenting with novella/novelette series. I thought, “Hmm, that sounds like fun. I wonder if I could do it?” “The Snow Queen” immediately popped into my head, followed by the basic idea for how the story could be expanded and modernized—and Bitter Snow was born.

I originally was going to do seven novellas, to match the “seven stories” structure of the original fairy tale, but then Volume Two got too long and became Volumes Two and Three. Eight volumes didn’t feel right (I’m a sucker for those magic numbers—three, seven, nine), so I decided to expand it to nine volumes.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I got the idea in February 2013, though at first it was intended to be more of a side project, so I didn’t spend a huge amount of time on it. Gradually, though, it kind of took over my writing time, which is limited at the moment by my day job as a freelance editor. I’m finishing up the final edits on Volume Three: Twelfth Night right now, so it took about 10 months for the first three volumes (about 275 pages combined, 100,000-ish words). About the size of one average full-length novel.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
That feeling when the story is unrolling in my head like a movie. I can see and hear it all, and I can feel that energy translating itself onto the page. The story becomes real in my mind, and hopefully becomes real to my readers.

If I don’t get that feeling, either in the first draft or the rewrites, then I know that that particular section of the story isn’t ready for prime time yet.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
When that thing I talked about in the last question isn’t happening! First drafts are really hard for me, unless I have a detailed outline of the scene already in place. Sometimes you just have to get words out on the page anyway, and fix them later, but it’s hard for me when I’m typing away and I know the story just isn’t coming to life yet.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Does it have to be a real-life person? Because I want to be a kick-ass female action hero like Katniss Everdeen or Xena the Warrior Princess or Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica (the new version where Starbuck is a woman). And if I’m only her for one day, chances are I won’t have time to get myself seriously maimed.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I cleaned out my fridge about a week ago, and found some very scary things in it. I think the oldest was a jar of some unidentifiable green-fuzzed gravy-like thing that had to be about a year old. It was not pretty.

The oldest thing I’ve ever had in my fridge was a parfait glass of green Jell-o that slipped behind one of the crisper drawers and wasn’t found for 18 months. The most disturbing part was that it looked virtually unchanged—just harder and less jelly-like. That scared me a little—what is this stuff that never dies? I don’t think I’ve eaten Jell-o since.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
In 2014 I’ll be working on the next 6 volumes of Bitter Snow. Also in progress is the sequel to my first book (Aladdin’s Samovar), which is a humorous suspense novel about a woman who finds a genie in a brass samovar, makes a wish, and ends up on the run from the Mafia with her long-lost father. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005PG4Q18)

In the sequel, the genie continues to get my main character, Amber Polaski, into all kinds of trouble—this time involving an evil clown, buried treasure, and a midget cowboy carnival show.

I may be delusional to think I’m going to get all that done in 2014, but I’m going to try!

In Our Dream by Jacqueline Paige

Jacqueline Paige lives in Ontario in a small town that’s part of the popular Georgian Triangle area. No one has ever heard of Stayner, so she usually tells people she lives “near Collingwood” and no, she doesn’t ski at Blue Mountain or at all, in fact she’s not even fond of snow.

She began her writing career in 2006 and since her first published works in 2009 she hasn’t stopped. Jacqueline describes her writing as “all things paranormal”, which she has proven is her niche with stories of witches, ghosts, physics and shifters now on the shelves.

When Jacqueline isn’t working at her ‘reality job’ or lost in her writing she spends time with her five children, most of whom are finally able to look after her instead of the other way around. Together they do random road trips, that usually end up with them lost, shopping trips where they push every button in the toy aisle, hiking when there’s enough time to escape and bizarre things like creating new daring recipes in the kitchen. She’s a grandmother to four (so far) and looks forward to corrupting many more in the years to come.

Hope flares each morning in the tiny flash of a second before Lette touches that first thing. And destroys it.

Her online journal spans a decade, beginning with the day a thirteen-year-old inherits an extreme form of the family ‘gift’. Every day whatever she touches converts into something new: bunnies, bubbles, bombs, and everything in between.

Lette’s search for a cure leads her to Stefan, whose fairy-tale looks hide a monstrous legacy, and to Rag, an arrogant, crabby ex-angel with boundary issues. The three face an army led by a monster who feeds on children’s fear. But it’s their own inner demons they must defeat first.

Book Trailer

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
My daughter and I have this tiny little life-altering addiction to superhero movies. Okay, we’d probably starve to death with chocolate only a room away if a Marvel hero was in front of us. (Except Hulk, of course, because that would be just wrong.) But in general, give some guy a spandex outfit and a mask and he owns us.

One night we started talking about superheroes with awkward powers. Let’s say you are the Man of Steel, but you don’t dare have sex with Lois Lane because your LittleMan of Steel would probably split her in two. (And we’re not even going to discuss the havoc your Swimmers of Steel could wreck on Woman of Pasta…)

The point is that when you think about it, most people with special powers would be lining up to get rid of them and get their normal lives back. That’s where Null City comes in. After one day there, those with extra gifts turn into their closest human counterparts. For example, imps become baristas. (Of course, they’re now ex-PhD candidates in literature or classics who claim to be experts on third-world coffee blends and obscure world music groups. But hey – there is only so close to human that hellspawn can get…)

So the point of Null City is that it takes our fantasy worlds and turns them into normal life.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first book in the series (One Way Fare) took a year to write. And edit. And rewrite. But Don't Touch is a quick read set in that world, and it just flew onto the page.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love to tell myself a story. And of course, there is the whole power trip, which appeals to me as a parent. And yet, it's a sad truth: even though I hold the power of life and death over them, my characters have no more respect for my authority than do my children. Hmmm....

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Taking my beautiful, deathless prose and sending it into exile in my dead kittens file. Even though I tell my words that they are just resting, and that I will find a use for them someday, I suspect they know that I also have several old bridesmaids dresses I said the same thing about.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I'd like to be the Pope for about fifteen minutes. I'd quickly change several rules, and then go back to being me, turn on CNN, and sit back to watch the fun.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
There is a bowl of brown stuff in the freezer. Some days I tell myself that it might be the banana chocolate ice cream we made last Christmas. Other days I feel sure that it is the best-forgotten sludge from a very unfortunate attempt at Duck Liver Pâté. I usually come to the conclusion that it's best not to risk finding out which it is.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I'm having lots of fun with the Null City series right now. In the next two books, things will take a slightly darker turn and some favorite characters will have a difficult time. (Do you think maybe the power of being their author has gone to my head?)

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
We both love Renaissance fairs and festivals. We look forward to them every year. We thought the mystery, and paranormal elements went well with the setting. Jessie and her friends took on a life of their own once we started writing!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Once we actually sat down at the computer, about three months. It takes about a year before that to get all the ideas and characters in line to write it.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The rough draft. Telling the story from beginning to end and discovering everything about it.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Revisions and editing. It takes all the fun out of it.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
The king and Queen of England. Why not?

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The oldest thing is a jar of pickled herring. It’s about a year old. It was a gift. It seems rude to throw it away.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More fun. More mystery. More spooky stuff!

As a Fairy Godmother, it's Callie's job to grant wishes and deport supernatural creatures back to their plane of existence. Now she's got an angel in her sights Gabriel's a gorgeous, sexy distraction to Callie doing her duty. But she has a reputation to maintain and no smoking hot angel is going to mess that up. Gabriel is determined he's not going anywhere and he'll try everything he can to convince Callie he belongs on Earth. But she's equally determined to get the job done before the angel kills everything in sight—even if that means fulfilling Gabriel's deepest fantasy.

Story #2 - HANDLING MERCURY

Vampires may go for the throat. But a Fairy Godmother will aim lower . . .

Elizabeth and Mercury both work for SERA, the Supernatural Entity Recovery Agency. Despite the fact Elizabeth's a Fairy Godmother and Mercury's a vampire, they make a deadly duo when it comes to deporting supernatural beings. But Mercury and Elizabeth's perfect partnership changes the night a wish is granted.

Now Elizabeth can’t think of Mercury without remembering how sexy the vampire is under his cool demeanor and designer clothes. And Mercury can't forget the taste of Elizabeth's blood nor the desire to have her in every other way as well. Can their partnership survive and will they find a way to grant their very own wishes?

Story #3 - FINDING NAVARRE

A lone wolf is about to find out old dogs can learn new tricks.

Navarre is a werewolf and the Director of SERA. It’s his job to oversee the agents who deport supernatural beings from Earth. He loves his work and his vaunted reputation for remaining calm under pressure. But all that is about to change. Tor is also a werewolf and SERA’s newest agent. He’s out to catch not only the bad guy, but his elusive boss as well. It’s love at first sight for Tor, but Navarre doesn’t seem willing to take another chance on a relationship. When a mission goes bad and suddenly it’s Tor’s life on the line, Navarre must overcome his fears if he’s going to experience true love before it’s too late.

Story #4 - TASTING ABSINTHE

Two’s company, will three prove too much of a crowd?

Absinthe is a Fairy Godmother with SERA and Bryce is her irresistible partner. Absinthe is all about getting to know Bryce away from the job, but he comes with one big problem. His best friend Grey is a werewolf and Absinthe does not do wolves. Bryce is in love with Absinthe. Problem is, he’s also in love with Grey. It will take something extraordinary to bring Grey and Absinthe together. Tracking a cold-blooded killer may just be the start of a beautiful romance. Will Bryce’s stubborn wolf and prejudiced fairy overcome their differences enough to not only stay alive, but form a bond strong enough to last a lifetime?

Story #5 - CHASING SIN

A good SERA Agent knows there’s only one Sin that matters.

As an agent and ‘evaluator’ for SERA, Jane is sent in to re-educate their only male Fairy Godmother before he does something even the Scary Fairies can’t ignore.

Sin’s sick of being the brunt of jokes and the latest pin-up after a nude picture scandal. He’s also indecently fascinated with his new ‘minder’, Jane. When a wish shows Sin a very different side to Jane, he’s desperate to find out more. On the hunt for a supernatural with a dangerous new toy and evil plans, Jane and Sin find out how well they work as a team. But can he get the prim and proper agent to loosen up enough to love a naughty fairy while she tries her very best to reform Sin?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Jason Bourne (Bourne Trilogy) ultimately inspired the creation of SERA itself. I wanted to write about a world populated by paranormal creatures, which existed within the ‘real world’ and would have the same grittiness. It was also important that my heroes and heroines experience normal problems – getting along with co-workers, dealing with ups and downs of the job and most importantly, falling in love.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
About 4 months including edits. Some stories flowed while others seemed to take forever!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating heroes, heroines and worlds that stir a gamut of emotion but are ultimately satisfying. I like the idea I can write the kind of story you just can’t put down, with characters you’ll never forget.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The fact I have, absolutely have to get a section (be it scene, chapter or paragraph) as clean as it can be before I move on. There are days I just want to write without worrying about spelling, punctuation or even if what’s happening is making sense. Ultimately the upside of such fussiness is that editing (something a lot of writers dread) is fairly painless.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Kresley Cole (author of Immortals After Dark) because I admire her ability to write a story that you quite literally can’t put down. If I couldn’t be her I’d swap with JR Ward or Gena Showalter – hey, if I could combine the talents of all three ladies I’d be thrilled!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The sugar roses from my wedding cake – they’re four years old. There’s also a tube of Super Glue, which may be slightly older. No, I don’t eat glue. Keeping SG in the fridge stops the glue not only from setting, but the lid from getting glued on.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The S.E.R.A. Files Vol II and III, a series called Alien Encounters and my two beloved long length series, Halo and Shadowmaker, which have had go on the back burner for the last two years. Expect a lot more from me as I have ideas, drafts and full ms’s filling up my computer!

Initiation by Rayna Noire

Rayna Noire is an author and a historian. The desire to uncover the truth behind the original fear of witches led her to the surprising discovery that people believed in magick in some form up to 150 years ago. A world that believed the impossible could happen and often did must have been amazing. With this in mind, Ms. Noire taps into this dimension, shapes it into stories about Pagan families who really aren’t that different from most people. They do go on the occasional time travel adventures and magick happens.

Leah Carpenter thought being the only witch in her local high school was hard. That was until she inexplicably found herself in the past running from an angry mob, which turned out to be much harder. Lionel, the man in charge of the mob, holds a grudge against a girl he calls Arabella. He thinks she’s Arabella.

Luckily, just about the time it looks as if she’s done for she pops back into her century. This causes trouble at school, but at least she has an understanding family. What happens in the past can hurt her. The whiplashes covering her body are proof enough. Her Nana believes she has to right a wrong in the past to stay in the present and go out with her crush, Dylan. What she discovers in the past is an evil so pure that it makes her blood run cold. She might not ever make it back for geometry class or more importantly a possible date with Dylan.

Pagan Eyes Interview/ Ethan Carpenter

Hello, today we are here with Ethan Carpenter, the younger brother of Leah Carpenter.

Interviewer: Welcome Ethan. What do you think of your sister’s adventures?

Ethan: Ah, yeah. (Runs hands through hair.) At first, no one told me anything. All secretive about it and stuff. Got my first hint when that angry British chick tried to rearrange my nose.

Interviewer: What happened?

Ethan: I was on the bus with my friend looking at a book with actual fairy photographs. They were old photographs, kinda faded or out of focus. It was really hard to pick out the fairy in the photo.

Interviewer: I meant about you getting punched and finding out about Leah’s ‘trips.’

Ethan: I was getting to that. Anyhow, this angry girl keeps ridiculing us, saying fairies aren’t real. My friend told her to shut up about it, I may have too. Anyhow, I am unlucky enough to live on the same street. When I get off the bus, she’s still wound up and shoves him into me. Calls me one of those odd British slurs that make no sense, something about being a soft drink. I may have said something like, “Right back at you.”

Interviewer: That’s why she hit you?

Ethan: It must have been. She sorta came unglued. Growling and swinging. She’s no petite chick either. Towered over me by six inches and outweighed me too. Counted myself lucky only to get a bloody nose out of it.

Interviewer: What did you do?

Ethan: Uhm that, well I couldn’t hit a girl, so I backed out of range. Headed home, that’s when I discovered Leah was home. She shouldn’t have been. Mom usually picks her up on her way home or she catches a ride with Stella. I walked into the house unannounced. At first, I stood inside the door listening.

Interviewer: What did you hear?

Ethan: I heard Nana telling Leah’s fortune with tea leaves. Trust me it wasn’t a particular good fortune either. Whenever Nana would identify a symbol, Leah would try to downplay it as not being that bad.

Interviewer: What did you do then?

Ethan: I slammed the door, so they would know I was there, then I walked into the kitchen. I must have looked horrible because Nana jumped up and almost forgot to cut a doorway in the circle. The two of them fussed over me.

Interviewer: So is that the end of the story?

Ethan: Well, honestly, it’s not my story to tell. Maybe you should talk to my sister. I might have already said too much.

Annie’s always been different. An empathic Amazon, she hides her emotional anomaly beneath her legendary fighting skills. To avoid passing on her genetic disorder, she’s always avoided the Thirteen Nights Ritual—the annual breeding rite among the warrior races of the Greek Pantheon. Only months away from 30, she is now duty-bound to participate. When she meets Tai, a half-human warrior who revs her up beyond legal limits and nurtures the gentleness she’s had to keep secret, thirteen nights of pleasure don’t seem nearly enough.

As a half human, Tai has survived by being faster, more lethal, and a whole lot smarter than his brethren. While the male warriors accept him for his achievements, the Amazons have never given him a second look. Until he meets Annie, whose smile is warm and real and whose body shudders with desire—for him. Determined to have her, he hacks into the Thirteen Nights database and rearranges the pairings to make Annie his breeding partner. Together, their strength and tenderness combust into pure love.

But Tai’s actions are forbidden under Amazon law, subject to a death. To stay together and alive, they must take on the Greek Pantheon and win.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Two things come together to birth this story. First, the concept began as a group project among my critique partners. We each were to write a story that included a club run by a siren. The project fell apart for a number of reasons but I had a working draft by that time.

Second, I always knew I wanted to write a love story about an Amazon warrior and I used this project to make it reality. When I was doing some research, I fell into the story/myth of Antiope, who is the only Amazon ever known to marry. This is an updated, modernized version of her story but with a happy ending.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It took me around two months to write the first draft. I write in small chunks, around and between being a full-time single mom with a full-time job.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating something new, exploring the what-ifs in life, and putting the puzzle of the story together. I found the whole process of writing from initial plotting to character development to finding just that right word to be wholly stimulating. If you forced me to choose one thing, one thing I adore about writing is that it offers interesting journey of discovery into my own character and emotions. Crafting a novel or even a novella lets me take pieces of me, put them in a heroine and just watch what happens.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
That’s easy. Editing. I am a truly terrible copy-editor. I don’t see my typos. My bosses complain. J No matter how hard I try, I can’t get this part of it. I must have others review my work.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
This was a hard question for me. I literally contemplated it for several days after I read these questions. After much thought, I’m going to say the Dalai Lama. I want to see how his mind works, how he thinks about achieving a state of physical, mental and psychological peace and how someone can truly commit100 percent of himself to others. His words are wise and his life a role model for others. I wanted to see what that really entailed.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A box of baking soda my landlords or the previous tenants had put in there to keep the unit fresh. I’ve never switched it out. I don’t know how long it’s been there. I’ve been in the house for three and a half years.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am working on the next two books in the Divine Temptation series. Life Reignited is Phoebe and Sander’s story and Hope Restored is Marta’s story. You’ll meet all these characters in Thirteen Nights, which is Book 1 of the series. It’s a fun, playful series that looks at how societal rules and cultures impact our individual ability to live our own, authentic lives and how love is, or should be, an expression/extension of our authentic self. It may sound heavy, but I am having so much fun writing them, I think it shows.

I also have a full draft of a science fiction romance, tentatively titled Race to Redemption. It’s my first full length novel. As a long-time science fiction fan, writing it was truly an act of love.

It’s impossible to ignore the seductive appeal of a man sculpted like a Viking warrior.

Danton has only hours in human form to spend with the woman he has hungered for. He’s convinced what’s between them is more than hot sex, but he needs to convince Tracy of that before he turns back to stone.

A Romantica® paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I love gargoyles. Ever since I wrote the first book in my Underground Encounters series, which is set in a goth club filled with gargoyle statues, I’ve wanted to write a story about one of the statues. In this case, it is when one of them reveals his true nature while protecting the woman he’d been admiring while in stone.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It’s a shorter story, about 14,000 words, much shorter than my novels. However, the tight word count made editing take longer than usual and I had to significantly rewrite the story. My editor had me cut out sub-plots and stick to the essential storyline and she was right; This version is much stronger than the first. So the first draft didn’t take too long, but the revisions took much longer than I anticipated.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love losing myself in the world of my characters, wondering what they will do next. I can’t imagine ever being bored because I can just let my imagination wander.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
It isn’t easy and it is emotionally draining at times. I often feel guilty from the time I take away from my family when I write. They are very supportive, though.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Eww, I’m afraid to check. Oh, I know. A celeriac from our farm share that just sits in the veggie drawer mocking us to do something with it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More gargoyles, rock stars, brilliant tortured heroes, kick ass heroines, and a lot of hot, sexy romance!

He will bend every law necessary to do so, willing to do anything to protect Raina from her demons and the men who haunt her, going as far as placing his career and life on the line to save hers. Raina will give up everything she has worked so hard to achieve, even flee the country to keep Kas from the wrath and powerful reach of her abusive father.

In the midst of the FBI team closing in on the Ghost, another ghost from Raina's past taunts her, promising that she will be his. Meanwhile, a different trafficking ring is gaining strength in New Jersey. Michael solicits Raina's help, needing her smooth, sultry voice to win the audition for the new singer in the ring leader's swanky night club. Raina knows her life is in jeopardy with the dangers of being undercover, but she is blindsided when she discovers that it's her heart that is threatened with a mortal blow.

Raina tries to heal from the nightmares of her dark past as the grisly bodies of innocent victims surface when the team gets closer to discovering the identity of the man responsible for the infuriatingly clever and powerful slavery ring. When Raina finally comes face to face with the Ghost, he quickly engulfs her in a twisted game of cat and mouse, delivering a veiled threat as he slips through her fingers. As the ghosts of her past and present ensnare her in their deadly web, Raina realizes the danger has just begun.

Never before encountering a worthy adversary, he’s fascinated by Raina and is enjoying the refreshing challenge of her intellect.

The danger ignites to a blazing new level, and Kas struggles between the need to finally exorcise the Ghost and his need to protect his wife. Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Thank you so much for having me today! I knew that I wanted my debut novel to be romance because I’m a sucker for a good love story, but I wanted it to mean more. I have some experience working with survivors of domestic violence, but I didn’t have any experience with human trafficking, other than what I heard on the news. After doing some research, I was horrified and enraged. The Rain Trilogy is my humble attempt to help shed some light on this dark issue. Even though the trilogy includes the depraving subjects of abuse and sex-slavery, hope and a beautiful redeeming love are weaved throughout the story as well.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I began writing Saving Rain, the first novel in The Rain Trilogy, in September 2012 and had all three live by the end of October 2013. Once I began writing about the love story between Kas and Raina, I couldn’t stop writing!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Becoming completely obsessed with the characters J Kas, Raina, Chase, and the rest of the team became like my family. I know that sounds crazy, but after thinking, writing, and even dreaming about them every day for a year, they became a part of who I am.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I LOVE writing; I’m not nearly as enthused about marketing. It’s been amazing connecting with authors, bloggers/reviewers, and readers throughout the journey so far, and that’s a part of writing that I hold close to my heart, but trying to promote my books feels a bit awkward to me.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Wow, great question! I would love to be the President for one day and one day only, but only if I could institute lasting world peace and equality. If those aren’t part of the deal, I would have a blast being a rock star instead, probably Pink, because I cannot sing at all and would love to have that gift for one day!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Ha, I had to go look in my fridge for this question. I did have a bottle of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup that expired a month ago, but it is now in the trash.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m working on a completely different novel called Ash to Steele right now. I hope to be finished writing the novel and get it to the amazing beta readers by the end of December.

Thank you again!

Joslyn Faust passed away in 1940, after losing all but one of her children to death. The Weatherby Mills history books paint her as a kind, generous woman, willing to lend a hand to any one of her neighbors. Weatherby Mills lore, however, blames her ghost for the deaths of at least four men.

That’s where Delilah Isles and Milly West come in.

Working for the New England Spirit Society, the women have seen many violent and cruel attacks by human spirits and non-human entities. After all, the most violent and disturbing cases come to them. They know the myths about Joslyn Faust, so when the case comes their way they are both anxious to start investigating and uncertain whether or not it’s a case for N.E.S.S. But the first time they set foot on the Faust property that uncertainty is vanquished, because Joslyn Faust turns out to be a whole lot darker than they anticipated.

Apocalipstick by Lisa Acerbo‏

Lisa Acerbo is a high school teacher and adjunct faculty at the University of Phoenix. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, daughters, three cats, and two horses. When not writing, she mountain bikes, hikes, and tries to pursue some type of further education--she's working towards an EdD.

Jenna should be having the time of her life at college. Instead, her only desire is survival. She lives in a world gone insane after a virus kills most of the population. Being alive after the apocalypse is bad, but when the undead return, hungry for humans, times turn darker. For Jenna and a small group of survivors, the goal is to reach the High Point Inn. At the inn, Jenna develops feelings for Caleb, who, while exotic and intoxicating, is not quite human. Will this new utopia last?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I grew up reading novels by Judy Blume, Johanna Lindsey, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King, among others. While entirely different genres, these authors inspired me to want to read more and write fiction. Is it odd that I love both horror and romance genres? I love authors who can create vivid conflicts and life-like characters in relationships, romantic or otherwise. These days I am inspired by the books my high school students read like Twilight, the Chicagoland Vampire Series, and The Hunger Games. I enjoy reading romances with action and adventure, and I hoped to create a book with those elements.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Apocalipstick took me about three years to complete. I was working on my EdD and writing the book was my creative outlet. When classes and weekly academic essays became overwhelming, I would fall into a creative black hole for a while and it helped. Writing creatively keeps me sane.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love the prewriting and drafting stages of writing. As Anne Lamott says in her book on Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, “The first draft is the child's draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later.” It is fun to get all the ideas down even if they make no sense when you reread them later.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writing a romantic scene is scary and intimidating. They are much harder to write than the zombie battles. I grew up in a very traditional, very Catholic family, so love scenes can be tough to write at times, but I am starting to get over that fear. Book two is zombies and romance 2.0.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Stephen King. I recently read two of his new books – Joyland and Doctor Sleep – and loved them. These stories reminded me why I enjoy not only teaching others about literature and writing but also practicing the craft myself. Even though I know I could never come close to King’s level of mastery, reading great stories makes me want to become a better writer.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I’ll have to clean it out one day and get back to you on that question.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Apocalipstick was my first book, but book two in the series is coming together. Jenna and Caleb undergo a challenging quest. They leave the safety of the inn and their travels resemble the traditional journey of the mythological heroes brought to light by Joseph Campbell. There are also many unexpected twists for the characters and someone rises from the dead, but not as a zombie. I was working on my first book and already planning the next book in my head, thinking about the changes and developments that would happen to Jenna and Caleb, the main characters.

With Hunter in the picture Mattie's life is turned upside down. Was love with a mortal possible? Unfortunately, Mattie has no choice but to find out.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
As cliché as it sounds, I actually was inspired by a dream. I have always been one to have vivid dreams. Oddly enough, most involve taking tests at school or getting lost at the mall! This dream in particular stuck with me like gum under a shoe. I just couldn’t shake it and knew I had to expand on the idea of it all. Though the dream was actually a bit darker and horror-esque in comparison to Green, I made sure to keep certain elements including witchcraft and the Life Hunter rings throughout the novel.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
From conception to publication it took me roughly 5 months. This included rewrites, editing, beta readers and formatting.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I’m a bookworm by heart. I believe all the bibliophiles of the world are my kindred spirits. Just like reading, my favorite part of writing is getting lost in a different world. I get to know and grow along with my characters. It’s really an awesome feeling.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I’d have to say my virtue of double thinking J I always feel like there’s always something to change or something I could have written better. I’m my own worst critic! I really have to find a way to get passed that.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Good question! Hmmm…This is a very hard one! Can I get back to you on it? Haha

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
LOL! That’s another great question! I have to really think about it, but I believe it is the packet of cheese that my husband and I used for our “Taco Tuesday” night. Which Tuesday was that? Let’s just say it was many, many Tuesdays ago.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Many, many stories. I have many ideas swimming through my head and if only I had time to jot them down on paper! But seriously, the final book of the Life Force Trilogy, Silver, has an anticipated release date of January 31, 2014 (Make sure to read Green and Red before then!). I also have a finished Adult Horror novel that I am hoping to publish soon and I am also currently writing a Chick-Lit as well. All in all my readers can expect a bombardment of books from me!

Just Live, Juliette! By Stephanie Andrassy‏

Stephanie Andrassy is the coffeeholic author of Noble Lies, a fantasy romance, as well as the paranormal romance Home series. Beginning with the free short story, The White Peacock, the journey within this supernatural series continues in Just Live, Juliette! (Home Series #1) and Rocks Don’t Cry (Home Series #2), and will be joined by at least two further books.

Readers are anticipating further new releases in 2014, including a sequel to Noble Lies and the next book in The Home Series.

You never know what the morning after has in store for you, especially after drinks at a bar, a perfect man, and a night of the best sex you have ever experienced. Rather than dancing through a field of daisies, Juliette may be pushing them up instead. She awakes to a world where everything is familiar and nothing is what it appears to be; where the key to endless love is learning to just live.

This is the first book in the Home series; a journey which began with the short story, "The White Peacock", included for your convenience and reading pleasure.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I hadn’t planned to write this story. Initially, the idea was to simply write a short “paranormal story with a twist” for a competition, but by the time I’d finished writing The White Peacock and sent it out my door almost a year ago, I was dying to know what happened after that last paragraph. That’s when the fun really began. From the ashes of The White Peacock, the full-length novel Just Live, Juliette! was born; a story detailing the journey beyond death, set in the day-to-day landscape and social fabric of the afterlife. It was an opportunity to explore all the questions about the afterlife that had always fascinated me and pull together thoughts and theories floating around in my mind if only for my own amusement and your reading pleasure - ghosts, psychics, kindred spirits, interactions with mortals, previous lives, etc.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft of the story from start to finish was “on paper” in about two months. When a story grips your mind, the only thing holding it back is your typing speed. From there, I spent another couple of months in edit mode before it was off to my amazing team of beta readers.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I’m a night owl. The world is a quiet and peaceful place at 2 am and I love how my stories dance in front of this quiet and dark backdrop with next to no distractions (apart from the dog wanting to go outside). It’s an awesome feeling - knowing the world around me is asleep while I slip off and immerse myself in the world of my characters.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Mornings. If I can’t quiet the story in my mind until the wee hours of the morning, it makes that 7 a.m. alarm clock buzzer sound particularly evil.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’m quite happy being me, but if I had to choose, I’d like to take over the body and mind of one of the world’s tyrannical dictators for a day. I don’t have a specific name to offer (unfortunately, there’s a bit of choice), but I quite like the idea of being given the opportunity to rubber stamp some changes into place - redistribute the wealth, food, healthcare, housing, education, clothing, etc. to the benefit of a suppressed population, and put plans into place to ensure a brighter future for my fellow man. Maybe it couldn’t be done in a day. Can I have more time?

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The light bulb. It came with fridge about twelve years ago and still burns brightly every time I open the door.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have two projects on the go at the moment - the third book in The Home Series (Just Live, Juliette! is the first) and a sequel to my fantasy romance, Noble Lies. I’m planning to have both of these out my door later in 2014. After that, there will be the fourth (and possibly a fifth) book wrapping up the Home Series, and a couple of contemporary romances that are itching to be written. One is done in first draft form so that may be where I start. It’s been sitting on the back burner (in a drawer) for several years now.
